Urgently: how to remove the CDE frontpanel

Dear expert,

Could you let me know how to remove the default CDE frontpanel?

I don't mean the frontpanel minimization.

Thanks,
WK Chang

Be forewarned that there are a few misleading questions in the set. An
example:

> Which kill signal stops a process unconditionally?

The obvious answer is SIGSTOP, code 23. The listed "answer" is SIGKILL.
There is a definite difference between stopping a process and terminating
it.

Having tried to do useful things with admintool once upon a time I have to
wish for an "all of the above" option. :)

Solaris SysAdmin Quiz

One of my fav questions is "Do you use admintool?" A positve answer results in
a negative mark.

I have a basic set of questions I select from, depending on the level of the
person and the position we need to fill.

I update it on occasion; it's at http://zilla.nu/Projects/AdminTest.

Please note that I use it to judge the depth of a person's experience, and to
see how they answer questions. The best answer is always, "Hmmn. I don't know
that, but I'm curious to find out. What's the answer?"

I gave up on using the test in phone screens; too many folks who list DNS Admin
on their resume can't tell me which major version of BIND they run (4 or 8, not
that hard).

Switch off multicast on one interface

Hi guys,

We're trying to stop multicast messages coming in from one interface. The
machine is an Ultra 5 running 2.6. Is it possible to change the setting of
that interface so that it does not accept multicast? And is it possible to
do this without installing 3rd party software? Our ifconfig -a looks like
this:
hme1: flags=863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        inet *.*.*.* netmask ffffffc0 broadcast *.*.*.*

Would changing the MULTICAST flag to NOMULTICAST do this and how would you
change it?

Creator 2D vs. Creator 3D?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a Creator 3D from my current Creator 2D
in my Ultra 10; anybody know if this would be much of a performance
increase, if at all? I dont do much OpenGL stuff at all...

Personally, I prefer the term `suspending'. To me, to stop means to
terminate - either way, it's just a matter of semantics. It's a good
thing this quiz doesn't count for anything :)

My least favorite question was -

   2. Which of the following could not be used to manipulate a text file?
              sed vi grep awk

Of course they can all be used to manipulate a text file. Duh!
(but they seem to think the correct answer is `grep'.)

Hello
I have just connected a Spectra Logic 10000 to my SUN E-3000 running
Solaris 2.6.
Now I can see the 2 drives in the library but do not know how to access it
from the command line.

Any pointers will be help full.
TIA

new tape library

Naser,

change directory to mapping of tape devices
# cd /dev/rmt

and do listing to see what the logical mapping of those drives are:

# ls

you should see something with 0 0n.... 1 1n ..... 2 2n.... and similar
increment numbers to that effect.

Put a tape in one of your new drive and do a tar test

# tar cvf /dev/rmt/0 /etc
or
# tar cvf /dev/rmt/1 /etc

and see which tape drive lights up during the tar process. This is
assumming you don't have an internal 8mm tape in the E3000. If you
already had one in there, try:

# tar cvf /dev/rmt/1 /etc
or
# tar cvf /dev/rmt/2 /etc

new tape library

You could also use "mt" i.e

Put a tape in one of the drives and:
	mt -f /dev/rmt/1 stat
/dev/rmt/1: no tape loaded or drive offline

See which tape lights up.

If the drive you put the tape in lights up, you should get some information
about the drive and tape that is loaded.

If you get the response:

	mt -f /dev/rmt/1 stat
/dev/rmt/1: No such file or directory

Then /dev/rmt/1 does not exist. Try /dev/rmt/2.
