IPv6 on last OpenSolaris release

Hello all,

I'm having a bit of difficulty configuring IPv6 on OpenSolaris (snv_134).
This is pre-ipadm so the documentation and a lot of google isn't too
helpful.

What I need to do: is configure this via ifconfig or similar.
(I also don't want to reboot the zone.)

root <at> meaghan:~# ifconfig vnic1 inet6 plumb
root <at> meaghan:~# ifconfig vnic1 inet6 2001:470:1f07:e53:beef:d00d::1337/64
up
ifconfig: SIOCSLIFADDR: vnic1: Cannot assign requested address
root <at> meaghan:~# ifconfig vnic1 inet6 addif
2001:470:1f07:e53:beef:d00d::1337/64 up
Created new logical interface vnic1:1

However, nothing can ping that IP and it can't get out...and I'm not able
to configure the gateway...because the gateway isn't on the same network..

Ideas? Tarballs of ipadm and all related libraries?

Thanks!

Lost grub menu background

After playing around with luupgrade on a test machine I no longer have the
nice blue grub menu background. There is a line in the menu.lst that says
splashimage /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
and the file does exist.

Does anybody know what the problem could be?

Thanks.

problem with net-installing a sun ultra 60

hi,

i am new on this list seeking for some help. i've bought a sun ultra 60 a
while back and wanted to install solaris 10 on it (i am quite familiar with
sun, having an ultra 10 before). my ultra 60 lacks a dvd drive, there's
only a cdrom installed, so i wanted to try to install solaris over network.
i've setup a linux machine for this task -- bootp, rarpd, bootparamd, nfs,
everything setup properly (i am unable to use my ultra 10 for this task,
because currently it's broken). anyway -- as far as i can see everything is
set up properly on the linux side -- sun get's it's ip, loads the
bootparams and get's access using nfs (checked by reading the logs and
output of netstat on the linux machine).

i am installing from openboot and output is as follows:

Boot device: /pci <at> 1f,4000/network <at> 1,1 File and args: -
39e00 Using RARP/BOOTPARAMS...
Internet address is: 10.0.0.230
hostname: ultra60
domainname: (none)
Found 10.0.0.205 <at> mac-address
root server: 10.0.0.205 (10.0.0.205)
root directory: /sol10u11/Solaris_10/Tools/Boot

then there is the spinning '|' and after quite a wile where i see some
activity over nfs on the linux machine the following error message appears:

"Unsupported device parameter: seek"

I am unable to dig anything useful up for this error message. I've tried

Re: SunHELP Digest, Vol 93, Issue 2

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't care about the extra space on the 9GB
drive, all I want to do is to put the information from the 1.3GB disk (in
an external housing with it's own power) that is currently not responding
that I have backed up in a binary copy on the disk and have it run from
there instead. So this is not the boot disk, that's sorted already.

As the 1.3GB disk was about to break I can't be 100% sure my backup is OK.
I'll try and see if I can find a second working 2GB something drive and try
that.

Messed with the 9GB today and got past the cylinders and such settings in
the format program. Got a proper SUN1.3G... etc name for it, formatting
didn't work got some error there the analyze part seemed to go through the
"whole" disk according to the too small settings I had set. Disk speed
wasn't possible to set to 7200 even... don't know why it matters.

I'm not used to this system, have never had to do anything like
partitioning a hard drive in anything but a DOS/Windows/Amiga environment
before. The terminology is new and strange sometimes.

So, better look for an old drive and hope a bitcopy will work, otherwise I
guess I need to spend some time with the ST41600N and try and get it to
work properly long enough to grab a proper copy.

Xnest or Xephyr to Solaris host? Can't get it to work now...

Seems to me I was doing this ok some time ago but can't get it to work
now. I want to get to the login screen on a Solaris host from another UNIX
box.

Xnest :1 -query host.ip

brings up a blank screen on my client but nothing further comes up. Should
this work without any changes on the Solaris host? What am I missing here?
Thanks.

Changing hard drives SunOS 4.1.1 Sun4c

So, have this Sun Sparcstation 2, the frambuffer broke, bought a
replacement, the PSU broke, bought a replacement, the external drive
started acting up, took a backup copy with a clone tool on a PC, internal
drive started going wacky as well, had to turn it on it's side to make it
work... have swapped the NVRAM as well, hacked with an external battery.

So, soon there are no original parts left.

I used the EaseUs hard drive clone tool from a Ultimate Boot CD, got an old
2.25GB drive and successfully made a copy that it booted from. Got the
panic copy of the external drive with the same program, only option at the
time was an SD-card in a SCSI-card reader and pointing a fan to the
external hard drive (5.25" huge monster) at a pair of circuits going hot.

Disks in that size isn't very easy to come buy at reasonable price so when
a friend offered a 9GB hard drive with a 68 pin connector and a 50 pin
adapter I tried it out. Copying from the original giant sized drive didn't
want to work again so I ran the EaseUs program from the UBCD 5.1.1 with the
SD-card instead. Went fine, no errors.

After hooking it to the Sparcstation 2 it wasn't accepted, complained about
the header - seems it wasn't what it was supposed to be, found some tip
about replacing a missing header and checked the format command but got
stuck when it asked for cylinders etc, couldn't find any proper information
about that and I haven't dealt with it since I added hard drives to my
Amiga in the early 90's.

So I quit, took a look at the drive in WinHex with the drive hooked to a
SCSI-card in the PC. The header was emptied out, the previous "SUN1.3G cyl
1965 alt 2 hd 17 sec 80 etc etc" wasn't there any more, possibly the format

Bill's Freudian slip? Some people have TOO MUCH sense of responsibility

Bill, guys, I thought you would all get a much needed laugh out of the
following I saw on Bill's Ask SunHELP Section. Sorry for the lack of
formatting, I am posting from a text console client.

Advice I give comes with no guarantees or warranty of any kind, and should
be used "at your own risk".

I've been using Sun equipment for fifteen years, but I am responsible or at
fault for any data loss, downtime, or inability to fix a problem.

Uh, I think you probably wanted to say "but I am NOT responsible or at
fault for any data loss, downtime, or inability to fix a problem."

DEC Tulip (21143) and Solaris 10 (SPARC)?

Evening all,

I have recently gotten a quad-port DEC Tulip with 21143 chips...which
out of the box seems to not be supported by the dnet driver on Solaris
10 (SPARC) (or the card isn't actually showing up because it's dead or
something).

Is there a special driver I can shove in for this card? Is the 21143
similar enough to another chip that I could shoehorn its driver in to
supporting the 21143?

Any assistance appreciated!
