In addition to that, the identity management stuff was spun off by Sun
into open-source projects, e.g. OpenDS, OpenSSO, and so on. Since Oracle
took over, those have been taken on by (or morphed into) the ForgeRock folks,
who have OpenDJ, OpenAM, and OpenIDM. There's forgerock.org and forgerock.com,
depending on your needs.

My own experience was with the old Sun JES Directory Server and Access Manager,
and then about a year ago we tested out OpenDS. The latter is Java-only, and
very much easier to install and manage than the old JES stuff. So I'd be
checking out the new OpenDJ if it were up to me....

Regards,

Marion

At best, their aggresive marketing may have a positive impact
on the Solaris eco-system even if Judith Sim and company's marketing
wonks are more interested in low-volume, high-margin niche.

Oracles public cloud

For the past three months Oracle has had the website:
http://cloud.oracle.com

I've registered for the services but haven't heard anything back. Question has or is anybody using these
services? Is it possible to transfer Amazon cloud configurations over to Oracle's cloud?

Is Cloud.Oracle.COM John Fowler and company's volume Unbreakable Linux
on top of Dell's volume hardware?

Either the verbage or the video says it's Exadata based.

It will be interesting when Oracle rents Exadata services instead of selling you the hardware.

Yes, see Judith Sim and company's FAQ:
<URL:http://cloud.oracle.com/mycloud/f?p=5001:24:0:::::>
| Finally, our cloud services are built upon the Oracle Exalogic
| Elastic Cloud and Oracle Exadata Database Machine, together offering
| a platform that delivers extreme performance, redundancy, and
| scalability.

I assume the VMs are hosted on Oracle's Unbreakable Linux and
file, application, database services are using whichever
John Fowler and company OS that provides best total cost-performance.

Perhaps Judith Sim and company's next BigAdmin newsletter can
explain those decisions.

I think it's safe to assume the VM's are going to be Xen based on Unbreakable Linux. After all there is no such
option on Solaris 11 other than a zone based cloud approach and I don't think Oracle wants to compete with
Joyent in that space. But Oracle should get something running to show they are serious about public based
cloud services. Signing up for announcements that never come seems a bit like vaporware.
