Color laser printer?

I have been looking for a good networked color laser printer for
Opensolaris. I was given a used HP 2600n printer, but I found out that
it is a host-based printer and there isn't a driver for it in the
selection of printers in the Opensolaris printer manager. The HP 2605n
driver won't work because the 2605n *has* a printer-based engine.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good color laser printer that
works "out of the box" with Opensolaris? I want a cheap, good-quality
printer for small office use in the $250 - $800 range.

Thanks,

Scott

I've been using the Dell 3115cn (Multifunction) and very happy with it.
I have it set up on the network (ethernet). It scans & prints (through
the ethernet port, works well for me) and copies and faxes for under
$700. They had a model without the mulitfunction, model 3110cn but that
is gone now.

So, it looks like Dell replaced the 3110 with 3130cn. What makes this
all good is it has Adobe PS3 and has Solaris listed for compatibility.

3130cn:

3115cn:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=222-6548

So I suggest take a look at Dell.

I use a Brother 2700CN color laser on my network. Even though it's discontinued
for the higher resolution models say the Brother HL-4070CDW or something
similar I couldn't be happier with all the nice interfaces, usb, parallel, and ethernet
interfaces into the Brother color lasers. Works well with network solaris, windows and
linux. The web based interfaces on Brother color lasers is a Godsend. I can configure
everything on the net to the webserver on the printer. All the solaris (SXCE,opensolaris)
goes PCL to the printer via bsd network printing. Winders gets a windows parallel port
attached to the printer. Linux cups.

I don't do that much printing, heck I'm lucky if I did 1k pages on it. My SO and daughter
abuse the hell out of it, more like 25k pages of print. I just make them pay for the cartridges now. :)

Solaris 10 u7 Problems

I have just installed Solaris 10 u7 onto a fairly generic PC and have two problems I wonder if someone could
help me solve.

1) Patch 121431-38 doesn't install and tells me to read the README and to do it manually. I can only find
121431-38.jar and not a README file. Do I need this patch (I am running ZFS root) and, if so, how do I install
it. I read the info at SunSolve about it but am no further enlightened.

2) oss sound. No sound "out of the box" so I downloaded and installed the OpenSOurce oss driver and it plays
music when I run osstest but the little speaker icon at bottom-right still has a red line through it and
claims it cannot open mixer device /dev/audioctl. Do I need to link something to something? All
oss-related entries in the messages file are copied below.

Cheers,

Nick

It's a Live Upgrade patch. What was the exact error message you got? How
did you try to apply the patches? The README for this one doesn't give
any special installation instruction.

The default GNOME volume control probably won't be able to handle OSS
properly. Have you tried with ossxmix? That should be the right tool

Nick,

Your given some good advice so far. I only want to add to this. You
didn't seem to know how to add patches manually.

1. download that patch from Sun
2. cd to the directory you downloaded the patch in.
3. use the following command:

# patchadd -d .

What this does is add the patches it finds in the current directory you
cd to.

See the man page for patchadd command. Incase you don't know how to use
man pages.
# man patchadd

That will bring up the man page for patchadd. It has a lot of info on
how to use that command.

Also I recommend you get pca perl script. This is a very nice utility

Just use unzip to extract the files in the .jar archive. The README is
inside it.

Can that handle .jar patches?
Typically once smpatch downloads a patch (or I do manually)
and its a .jar file..this is what I do:

cd /var/sadm/spool/cache

smpatch add -i <PATCH ID#>

I had some problems with the installer not necessarily installing everthing correctly. I cleared it up by
running "ossupdate" and see if that fixes the devices.

I used the Sun patch manager (that funny shield icon at the bottom right) to install the patches. It gave me a
warning that that particular patch had to be installed by hand but no further instructions. When I
searched for the patch I found a .jar file only.

Is there a way to link this to the speaker icon so that I can use that to change the volume and mute?

Thanks for your replies.
