I removed the first one to a backup directory and the boot messages
(with the pyton error) halted. Thank you.

pkgutil and pkg-get

Why on earth would a new utility like pkgutil be needed if it does the
same job as pkg-get always did for CSW packages?

Has someone worked with the 'new' pkgutil and found things for the
better compared to pkg-get?

I haven't had much experience with pkgutil yet. But, I get the
impression it is "smarter". For example, pkg-get would complain if it
couldn't find the catalogs because you started it in the wrong
directory. I haven't seen that with pkgutil, but maybe I've just been
lucky so far.

pkg-get 4.0 shouldn't have that problem either.

There have been some misleading "comparisons" on the web between
pkgutil and pkg-get. They compared against the OLD pkg-get version 3.x

Comparisons between pkgutil and pkg-get should be done against the
latest 4.x version of pkg-get.

the 4.x version has a whole bunch of bug fixes, and also the mode
where it will tell you how many bytes would be downloaded for an update.

Uncpture mouse under Windows with Virtual Box and Solaris 10 with Sun keyboard?

I am happily running XP under Virtual Box on S10 U6 on an Ultra 24.
However, the keyboard control to uncapture the mouse (so I can go from
Windows back to Solaris and back in again) is the right Control
button, however the Sun PC-style keyboard does not have that. Does
anyone know how to change the button that uncaptures the keyboard, or
how to do it on a Sun KB?

Thanks,
Robert

In Virtualbox: "File" -> "Preferences..." -> "Input" -> "Host Key"

Or install the virtualbox guest additions in the XP guest...

Thanks, somehow I have been missing that in Preferences.

RE: Solaris 11 Release Date?

Personally, I think Sun should keep 'Solaris 10' around for a long time (like Mac OS X), and just keep on
providing major changes in update releases. This would help people like Tony & myself that have to sell a
new OS release to higher-ups and VARs, etc. Our Solaris 8 --> 10 upgrade compatibility-wise was nearly
flawless, and I'd expect a 10 --> 11 upgrade to be similarly compatible, but its far easier to just say we're
doing an update (or 'service pack' for PHB's) to Solaris 10 systems.

Thanks Alan!
Should a tentative date is set could you please let me know?
It is a LONG process for my company to accredit a new OS release (more than
6 months), but I could get this process started by telling them a date.
Thanks again!

Hmm. I'd say that many of the .1 Mac version increments have included
fairly major changes, and certainly new features get added and some
dropped. So it's not a good comparison with Solaris 10.

I think that Sun needs to strike a balance. Too much of being stuck the
past, and new adopters will be put off. It isn't Solaris 10's >4 year
old version of GNOME that brings the users (and developers) flooding.
It's also my impression that adding new features does more for market
share than maintaining backwards compatibility.

Time will tell how well having Solaris and OpenSolaris co-existing to
cater for these somewhat different 'markets' works out.

A+
Paul
