Potential bug in ZFS default pools in S10U6 and OpenSolaris build 105 if using /export/home as basedir?

I've been using /export/home for my basedir since Solaris 8 - has this
convention changed?

I've noticed that if I change my default basedir for users from /home
to /export/home, I get all kinds of wacky ZFS errors (mostly concerned
with being unable to mount rpool/export/home after mounting
rpool/export) keeping some crucial services from starting.

A workaround for this is as follows:

<snip>
zfs unmount rpool/export/home
zfs unmount rpool/export
rm -rf /export/home
zfs mount rpool/export
zfs mount rpool/export/home
</snip>

Is this a valid bug, or am I breaking some ZFS or new Solaris
convention? Should I submit this as a possible bug?

This has happened in both Solaris 10 10/08 x86 and Solaris Express
snv_105 SPARC.

Please advise. Thanks in advance! :)

How?

Your nameservice usually takes care of mounting home directories. Which
nameservice do you use?

Which errors?

What does zfs list show?

useradd -D -b /export/home

DNS.

I can't paste anymore, cause I worked around the errors. However, I
can replicate the problem by using the default ZFS mounts from a
Solaris 10 or snv_105 install, using a single pool for all mounts,
having seperate mounts for rpool/export and rpool/export/home, and
immediately trying to add users with the command 'useradd -m userfoo'.

I've never changed the default base directory, why would you want to?

Odd, it worked OK for me:

X11R7.4: Xorg server 1.5.3, Mesa 7.2, and associated driver updates

SXCE.B107 will have this new X.
I read lots of complains about this on the FreeBSD mailinglist. It even
makes me worry a little what will happen on Nevada. It will probably be
OK, but is there already some news on how well this 'upgrade' goes?

Hey Al,

Quite impressive stuff, I'll look into it :-)
Still, I'd like very much to receive email warning when heat is
building, I won't be close to that box... Ah well, next time, I'll try
to get a BMC.

ACL on Samba shares preventing file removal

Hi all,

I'm still struggling to get some sort of ACL support on Samba shares of ZFS.

I installed the latest Samba patch, 119758-14.

There's a directory with rwxrwxr-x access.

User belong to the group, so has proper R/W access.

If Samba ACL are not configured for ZFS, it works as expected with the
same user from Windows.

If it is activated, then I can create and remove a directory, and I can
create and modify, but *not* remove a file.

Thz ACL shown in Windows say I shouldn't be able to remove either
directories or files. If I modify that (server-side, using chmod) to be
able to remove both directories and files, the behaviour is the same.

Any hope to get proper ACL support on ZFS via Samba one day? Does it
actually work in OpenSolaris 2008.11 with the CIFS shares?

What do you have in your smb.conf? I have a client who makes very heavy
use of ACLs with ZFS and we don't see any problems (with Solaris 10 U5
and 6).

CIFS and ACLs works fine as well.

Straight out of a blog, ceince there's no real documentation so far:

   vfs objects = zfsacl
   nfs4:acedup = merge
   nfs4:chown = yes
   nfs4:mode = special

Only the first line causes the issue.

That's seems incredible to me. ACL support was so buggy as of 2 weeks
ago, you had an error message and an ACL reset client-side everytime you
tried just to look at them (order problem).
And there were (are?) issues in the Samba code, parts of it are
hardwired to old-fashioned ACLs, and didn't get through the VFS part.

Just have a look at the last issues corrected in the patch, in
particular bugid 6701458.

So, maybe they don't see the problems - but they certainly have them,
unless they're using a Samba version modified from source, not the Sun
version.
