No dispute as OpenCSW is a fork of legacy Blastwave. Packagewise, you
can get updated FOSS/GNU packages from either source (i.e. a good
thing).

OpenCSW focuses on porting and supporting all FOSS and GNU software on
Sun Solaris 8. This means all SVR4 package formatted packages are
MAINLY ported and tested on Sun Solaris 8.

Blastwave expands from OpenCSW in FOSS/GNU IPS/SVR4 packaging and
supporting Sun Solaris 8/9/10 and OpenSolaris development.

A few of the sys admins and maintainers support both efforts. The
management may have changed, but the engineers tend to swim in the
same ocean.

The nice thing is that the packages from both pools are 'compatible'
unlike many other packaging build farms...

X4150 Solaris 10 preload - /etc/system entries

I recently got an X4150 (EDU promo version) that
came preloaded with Solaris 10 (5/08 s10x_u5wos_10 X86).
I added patches after configuring it and then added
SunRay server. Seems to run nicely so far :-)

It delivered with only two lines not commented out
in /etc/system:

set tod_validate_enable=0
set tod_validate_enable=0

Is there a reason for it to be repeated? Searching
a bit it seems that this is for preventing clock
problems on multi-CPU or multi-core machines. Is
this still a good idea for a fully patched Solaris
x86 update 5 on a machine with dual quad-core CPUs?
I'll probably upgrade to U6 soon ...

I do get an error reported on the console at boot
about tod_validate_enable but it didn't make it
into messages so I can't quote it. So I wonder
if I should comment out the repeated line?

Also, on the SunRay mailing list, it was suggested
to set hires_tick to 1 when using SunRay 4.1 on x86.
Any reason not to do that?

Thanks,

Stuart

These lines are not present on x4500 or x4540's.

I've been using that as the default on my systems for years without any
issues.

Nor are they present in a "fresh from DVD" install of Sol 10 5/08 on
an x4150, x4240, or x4450. (We never use the preloaded OS.)

OpenSolaris 2008.11

OSOL-2008.11
The final release is there. I'll check it out. My expectations are very
high. I do hope to see few bugs ;-)

Would you know if the 'pkg image-update' process will pull down this
upgrade, or does it need doing separately? Thanks.

I wouldn't know. Sorry.
I do know that the Grub menu from the CD is not correct.
It still mentions 2008.11RC2 ;-(

Yes, it will, the current bits in the repository correspond to this release.

It is correct. RC2 == 2008.11. We didn't rebuild to modify the menu.

Not sure how one parses the first sentence... :) What is clear is
that the blastwave infrastructure from the web is completely broken -
updated packages don't match the package version in the package list,
nor does the bug database exist, but, due to a huge update on the 26
of Nov., blastwave seems to have more current packages at the moment.
If drives would stop dying on me, I'd write something that would do
either....

Aside from not having recommended bundles anymore, how is the
situation any different now (aside from sun making more money back
then %-) )?

True. Though one has to consider whether it's worthwhile closing off
that hole, but run the risk (or in sun's case, actually doing it) of
pissing off the paying base by instituting a patch scheme that is
flaky. ..
