I am really not interested in buying anything right now and speed isn't
an issue while trying to learn Unix. I am going to take a look at
Linux. (Antiques are welcome there.) It looks like I will be able to
use the video, lan and audio that is on the MB.

It isn't unsupported, it's just not supported by the 96xx legacy NVIDIA
driver.
Other people have the Riva TNT2 boards working with the nv driver,
but they seem to be a bit flakey about detecting EDID. The contents of
/var/log/Xorg.0.log might be useful in debugging this problem.

I don't know the answer, but I see that (experimental) support for 2.6
Linux kernels was added in OpenSolaris b72. I *suspect* that Sun is only
providing CentOS 3, because that's the only version that Solaris 10
zones support.

Uninstall the OSS drivers and remove the PCI audio cards so
you can test the onboard audio with audio810(7D).

pcfs card fails to mount - Was Re: Can't restart after installation

Looks like it is recognized as a disk device (prtconf -D):

pci1014,566, instance #0 (driver name: ehci)
storage, instance #1 (driver name: scsa2usb)
disk, instance #1 (driver name: sd)
        pci8086,2448, instance #0 (driver name: pci_pci)

It doesn't automatically mount on /media like the USB hard disk
does. I can however issue a mount command as root and mount it:

# rmformat -l
Looking for devices...
     1. Logical Node: /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0p0
        Physical Node: /pci <at> 0,0/pci1014,566 <at> 1d,7/storage <at> 7/disk <at> 0,0
Connected Device: HAGIWARA CF Card Adapter 1.00
        Device Type: Removable
        Bus: USB
        Size: 488.7 MB
        Label: <None>
Access permissions: Medium is not write protected.
# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0t0d0p0:1 /mnt
# cd /mnt
# ls

ls shows all the directories and files appropriately.

All of what I describe was done *only* so that I can get an up-to-date
working copy of Adobe Acrobat! Loaded the CentOS 3 tar file provided
on the BrandZ project page on opensolaris.org. Then I could not get
the current Adobe reader to install without updated libraries. Also

OK this is a bit (?) off topic, but with wine I can run without any
problem Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.9.

ExpressCard SATA controller?

I've got a notebook running nevada - it has an ExpressCard
slot. Anyone know of any ExpressCard Sata controllers that
would work? One that seems to be based on a supported
SATA chipset is the Addonics device at URL:

http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/adexc34-2e.asp

The "2 Port eSATA ExpressCard 34" is based on the SIL 3132.
I expect that it runs on a PCI-Express version of ExpressCard
rather than the USB.

Any successes with the above or something similar for use
in a Solaris notebook with the drivers included in Nevada?
(the si3124 driver is supposed to work with the 3132 according
to the si3124 man page.)

The above card is not listed at:

http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/vendor/addonics_technologies__inc_.html

but I don't know how up-to-date that is even though it has a 2 Jan 2008
or that it applies to Express.

Thanks,

Stuart
