Not garbage at all. Your mplayer will play all modern wmv files,
blastwaves won't. I just don't want to see core Solaris become just
like Linux. Work like you do is invaluable (as is the work at
Blastwave and elsewhere). Thanks a bunch!

cdrw, cdreford and rmvolmgr on SXDE 02/07

On solaris 10 I have to disable rmvolmgr before using cdrecord or else
this program refuses to work. (don't know about cdrw).

But on solaris express dev edition this new HAL is introduced. rmvolmgr
still exists. Do I still disable it before using cdrecord? And how
about solaris native cdrw program?

Another thing is this popping up of a blank CD on my gnome-2.16 desktop
*even* after disabling rmvolmgr! How can I disable this?

No, the Nautilus CD recorder GUI (which uses cdrecord) and cdrw work
fine out of the box.

linux screwed up my solaris boot record

I tested the Ubuntu linux distro as a favor for my son. I did it on a
*second* harddrive (solaris is on c0d0s0). But still, that f** linux
installer ruined my solaris grub and installed its own version (which of
course, does not see my solaris on the first disk). Why on earth the
installer interfered on a disk on which it has no access is a complete
mystery, but alas.. <sigh>

Can I easely restore my solaris Express Dev Edition? How do I do that?
Hopefully I won't have to reinstall everything.

And yes, next time I'll *disable* my solaris disk completely.
This won't happen again.
But for now, please some help in restoring solaris grub.

Sounds like the Linux installer put Grub boot loader into the boot drive
MBR. If you want to put things back the way they were, use a
dos/freedos boot cd and run "fdisk /mbr" then use fdisk to make sure
that your original solaris partition is bootable. You should now boot
into the Solaris grub menu.

If you want to retain Ubuntu, add a chainloader boot to the Solaris
parition in the grub menu.lst in ubuntu.

recovering contents of a crashed disk

Hello,

One of the disks (SATA) of a solaris x86 10 system (ufs partitions)
crashed and was not properly backed up. The disk still turns but gives
many errors and is unuseable with usual tools. Does any of you know a
way to copy it physically on another disk in order to have a corrupted
but readable disk or is there any other way to recover at least part of
the contents ?

Thanks for your advice

Marc

I don't have a (free)DOS diskette. Are you sure it can only be done with a
dos disk? Can't it be handled by the solaris boot dvd?

No, I don't want to retain it. I want my solaris back and chainload
whatever from there ;-)

Solaris fdisk... http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/6mbb1kq1i?a=view
indicates it can install a new mbr, but I cannot grok how.

My personal solution is here... http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and use
"fdisk /mbr" in freedos.

I ran into this about a month ago. If you boot off the Solaris media, and

I guess it depends on the type of crash. In my experience, I've suffered
head crashes, disk degredation and electronics failure. Head crashses
are pretty hard because of the damage it does to the disk, but if it still
spins, there's a chance you get can get the data off. Mount the sucker
read only and give it a whirl.

When you say unusable with the normal tools, what have you tried.

I've also had some of my big IDE disks (160MB, 250MB) start getting
alot of errors. In the case of trying to recover the data, I used the format
read/analyze or write/analyze (doesn't harm data) to try and clear up
the errors. I just did this on a 250GB about six months ago and was
able to get the data off. Then I did a couple of format/verifies on the
disk and it managed to clean up the disk to be more usable. This
took 2 days to run twice. It's really too bad that Solaris doesn't have
SMARTtools so it can get information off the disk befoe it's really
having problems.
