More Help Requested for my Ultra 60 adventure.

Hi,

A while ago, I submitted some questions regarding a Sun Ultra 60 that I
had bought from eBay. To bring everybody up to date, the machine is
(delivered configuration is different from what was advertised):

-Ultra 60, 2 X300MHz CPUs, 1536MB RAM, 1X18.2GB Hard drive (advertised
as 2 X9.1GB drives), and Elite 3D-M6 Series 2 video card, CD-ROM
-I have added another 18.2GB hard drive

I have ordered, and received, the Solaris 10 CD ROM media kit (3/05).

The system shows the start up page (Picture of SUN, then the information
(System Type, CPUs installed, keyboard present, OBP level, some machine
ID numbers and IP hardware address). It runs the OBP diagnostics, the
only failures being the PCI slot test (I have no PCI cards in it) and
the transciever test for the ethernet port (I haven't hooked it up to
the router, yet). Probe-scsi shows the 2 hard drives (targets 2 and 3)
and the Removable Media drive (I assume the CD ROM) at target 6. I am
assuming the target numbers are the same as the SCSI ID numbers. It
shows the hard drive types correctly (Seagate ST318203LC and
ST318275LC), and the CD ROM shows up as SUN32XTOSHIBAXM6201B.

I can't seem to get it to boot from the CD ROM drive. I insert CD 1 into
the CD ROM drive, and type "boot cdrom", and have also tried "boot
cd-rom". It comes back with a message saying "wrong magic number" or
"no executable file". I used the OBP set defaults command to reset the
NVRAM, and it still won't boot, but now is trying to boot from one of
the hard drives. It never completes, as it is complaining about the
wrong frame buffer, and it is trying to do something with the file

It might be helpful if you say what the level is.

| Probe-scsi shows the 2 hard drives (targets 2 and 3) and the

Is the SCSI Bus correctly terminated?

The first is correct.

| It comes back with a message saying "wrong magic number" or

It is possible that the CD-ROM disk is defective. Have you tried
the other CDs in the kit, just to see if the same message appears?

No, "boot cdrom" is correct...
but, were there any boot instructios
provided with the media?

If you had burnt the media yourself
I'd guess the errors you're getting might
mean you burnt it incorrectly.

In this case it might mean damaged media,
or a bad drive (or the drive can't read
the media). Some of the older drives
can't read a burnt cd (as opposed to
a production cd).

See if you can read the media on something
else (PC?) If you have a PC, you should
be able to view the files on the CDs.
I might be mistaken (since it's
heresay), but I thought I heard that Sun
had produced some bad CD's, but that was
some time ago.

Also, are you sure these are SPARC and not
x86 CDs?

That's about all I can think of...

OpenBOOT commands make blade 1000 useless

Hello,

By a mistake and lack of knowledge of OpenBOOT, i set up the
configuration of a Blade to this:

diag-level = max
diag-switch = true
diag-device = screen

I think diag-file was set to empty. What can I do ? It is a blade 1000,
I never thought of the impact and risk of these commands.

Please, help to solve this incident, the openboot and post version are
the latest as today.

Thanks,

fabio.

Hm, though I'dont know the Blade 1000, what used to work is:
- Connect a keyboard
- Power on
- Press STOP-N

This should reset the OpenPROM entries to their default values.

OpenBoot

At the open boot prompt type 'set defaults'<enter> without the single
quotes. You'll be back to the default settings.

Re: OpenBOOT commands make blade 1000 useless

Hello,
diag-device is like boot-device, you just have to specify on what your
system will boot.

Wago connectors

i'm posting to the list in last-ditch desparation.

I'm in need of the Sun/Wago DC interconnects that are used on many
Netra servers, most notably (and in my case) the Netra T1. I've
bought a few netra T1's recently, along with DC power supplies - my
colo cabinet is wired for -48VDC in addition to AC - we have a lot
more capacity to spare on the DC side.

the problem is, Sun charges an arm and a leg for the Wago
interconnects - a ten pack is $50, which isn't horrible, but they
want another $18.70 to ship the six ounces of plastic to me less than
90 miles away. not to mention california sales tax. further, i've
googled till i'm blue in the face, and the few places that say they
carry them are all 'out of stock'.

so - does anyone out there have any spares they'd be willing to sell
me for a more reasonable price? i really only need five, but will
happily buy ten at sun's price - even if used - so long as i only
have to pay for the real cost of shipping, which should be about three bucks!

i've posted some photos of the connector here for reference:

any old IPC's around?

Does anybody have an old IPC or the like that they'd like to find a new
home for? I'm currently running a Sparcstation2 with OpenBSD 3.8 snapshot,
but I'd like to free up that machine if I could. Any reasonable drive from
the London, Ontario area would be great! (I also head into Toronto on
occassion, so that corridor opens up a few more possibilities)

I like minimalistic solutions. ;-)

Many thanks gang!

David
