Sun fc-al array disks question

Hello again,

Can anyone explain how a Sun fc-al array work ?. I mean, I am interested
in build one, so I have a couple of fc-al disks with their sprud bracket.
What should the case contain? I want to conect the array to the fc-al
external port on a blade 1000. So, the array case should have a
connector and a panel that allow to connect each disk separatly, right?
If I want to buy this on ebay, what I should search for? I already have
the disks, I just need the case for fc-al disks.

Can anyone please explain me a bit about this or point me to a link?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I just thought I'd follow up on this about the Apple CDROM drives. I've
accumulated quite a pile of the Apple CD 300e drives from salvaged
Macs. Certainly more than I will use personally. I have these installed
in my Ultra 1 boxes. If anybody needs one, I'll ship one for the cost of

SparcServer 1000 question about additional processors

Hello,

I've subscribed to this list for quite some time but not participated much
in the discussions. I now have a specific question to ask which I hope
someone here might know the answer to.

About a year ago I acquired a SparcServer 1000 locally. It has a single
processor board, with two CPUs installed. I have hoped to be able to
install additional processors in the server. I've watched eBay for
SS1000-related items and a few months back saw a SS1000 listed. At the end
of bidding, nobody had bid on it and I enquired and purchased just the
processor board out of it, with two more CPUs and memory installed.

Can I just plug this additional board into one of the three open slots for
this sort of card on my SparcServer 1000 to make it a four CPU box? Or is
there a 'slave' version of the CPU card that has to be installed instead,
or some settings I need to change on the card first? Any insights anybody
can provide would be greatly appreciated.

This is not a commercial-use question, I just have and enjoy running some
of the older Sun hardware. (The SS1000 also has a Drive Array that
connects over the optical cable.) This is my first 'real' Sparc server
hardware (besides some of the Pizza box SS's).

Thanks,
Scott

There are a only really two things you need to do, check the boot prom
version (they can differ, but the master must be the later) and arrange
the RAM correctly on all boards present. The SS1000 service manual has
the full details, and you can find it at:

Check the hardware compatibility list for Solaris 10 and release and instalation notes.

Maybe you have to boot the kernel with some special parameters.

Solaris flash post install

I created a flash install image off a Solaris 9 ultra machine
that is setup the exact way I want a few other ultras to be. So, NIS
is setup right, the right initial root pw is set, openssh is
installed and running, paths are right, and other programs are where
they should.

Using flarcreate I make the .flar image. Then I make it available
through NFS. I go to the target machine, boot it off the cd and then
select to install the flash image (I believe I had to say I wanted to
do webstart, but do not quote me on that), enter the server an dpath
to the image, and let it loose. After it was installed I rebooted the
machine. When it was ready I found out that:

o my /etc/nsswitch.conf was not installed
o Even though openssh is installed, it's /etc/init.d/sshd script is
not. Instead, the original Solaris one is being used.
o The root pw is not the initial root pw I setup when I created the
.flar image.

How come? Does it expect to use jumpstart to install itself? If so,
how do I tell the profile to stop mucking about regarding which
packages to install and just feed my .flar file and be over with it?

Solaris on Sun hardware misc questions

Hello,

Some misc questions that I want to know the answer from a long time ago:

1. is it possible to turn off (mute) the internal speaker of a Sun blade (others?) 1000 using a command line
(not using stdaudiocontrol) ?

2. Is it possible to turn off windows within SunPci and terminate the program from the command line? Like
choosing from the menu "turn off windows and exit" but using a command line?

3. How can I make the console less graphics orinted and more like a text console (like freebsd)? I mean, I want
to be able to execute a long display command and see it inmediatly and not wait for the console message to
displays slowly?. From openboot, I changed the cols and rows numbers but the problem is not fixed. I want a
console just like FreeBSD one, that is like a normal xterm windows but in text.

I have more questions but this is enough for now.

Thanks in advance for any answer.

Kind regards,

fabio.

RE:Accessing a Sun 4/330 using VT emulation

Hello Everyone.

I've just inherited a Sun 4/330 server without any apparent video card. It came from a working environment,
so I'm assuming that it was accessed via a network.
Since I'm not familiar with this platform, I would appreciate any assistance form this list's guru(s) to
access the server via VT emulation (which and how?) using a
stock standard PC or Mac.

Cheers
Salvatore

(What I'm saying here applies to most Sun machines - not sure about the
newer ones...)
Basically you need to have a crossover serial cable ("null modem" cable)
between serial port A of the Sun machine and whatever equipment you're
using to view the console of the Sun system (eg. Hyperterminal on a
Windows box). Also there cannot be a monitor or keyboard plugged in for
this to work.

If using Windows Hyperterminal, set your terminal type to VT100 and
after logging into the Sun machine, set your terminal type to VT100 and
you may well need to set the number of rows and columns (I know I do) -
use the stty program.

eg. after I login (if as root), I'd run the following commands:
TERM=vt100;export TERM
stty rows 34 columns 80

(Question for list readers: does it matter what you set the number of
rows and columns to - I use those figures since that's what is normally
on the regular Sun console).

Hope this helps.
