Not sure about the system 6 keyboard.

The system 5 keyboard works fine with the SS5 - I use one myself.

I think the bigger potential problem is the monitor you hook up to it.
I've seen problems with anything less than a 17" Trinitron (including a
regular 19" CRT). I think the feature the monitor needs is sync-on-green,
but I'm not 100% positive.
I don't believe I've seen them in a retail store (Sun stuff is generally
pretty obscure), but eBay tends to be a good source (I've bought several).

I assume you mean "Type 6".
If that's the case, then assuming its not the USB variety, then yes it
will work. Be aware that there are two keyboard layouts - the "PC"
layout (to the left of the "A" key is a Caps Lock key) and the "UNIX"
layout (to the left of the "A" key is a Control key).

Other than that, there shouldn't be any issues with Type 5 or 6
keyboards on a SparcStation 5.

As an earlier poster has already mentioned, the issue will in fact be
the monitor you connect to it.
I'll add one more thing though - it also depends on what framebuffer's
in that SparcStation 5.

Generally, if your monitor can support 1152x900x76Hz, this will be fine.
(If it supports 1280x1024x76Hz, then all the better).
To give you a rough idea, my Dell 17inch CRT monitor supports
1152x900x76Hz but only 1280x1024x67Hz)

SS20 dead slow w. apache/php/mysql CMS - alternatives?

I've got a chance to put my maxed out SS20 at a colo rather than just sitting
idle deskside. No big deal, just host a few community and personal sites and
have some fun.

One of the things I had been planning for it was to set up a community site
using Nuke derivative/rewrite Xaraya (php/mysql) as CMS. To my horror after
activating xaraya download (0.9.7) I had around, the thing runs like the
proverbial hog - taking from 5-10 seconds to load a page in the default
install. It's fine on regular static pages, though.

Web research indicates that the Nuke family seem not very efficient code and
cache wise. But the community site functionality is important to me. Anybody
know anything lighter they could recommend? config changes? FWIW hardware is
2 HS 150's, 512mb RAM with Seagate 4.3 gig drives. Sol 9 w. Sol versions of
apache 1.3.27 Mysql 4.0.15 and php 4.3.2.

Thanks for any suggestions.

there's a serious security vulnerability in all versions of php earlier
than current, 4.3.10. strongly recommend upgrading. same with apache -
numerous vulnerabilities. also highly recommend turck-mmcache. it can make
a huge difference in speed of page delivery for php stuff. and by huge, i
mean huge.

sourceforge site: http://turck-mmcache.sourceforge.net/index_old.html

i use the latest CVS version. the author was hired by a competitor, but the
code base is still being maintained by volunteers.

Thanks for that Paul - I'm definitely going to investigate this at the
first opportunity.

BTW - happy new year to all.

Re: Keyboard and mouse for a Sparcstation 5

To everyone who posted on this:
Thanks!

I picked up a Type 5 keyboard and mouse from eBay, having already bid
on this before the offer from a list member.

I also managed to track down Ultra-Spec cables on the net, and will
next payday, hoepfully, place an order for a 13w3 to VGA converter.

Hopefully this will work with my 19" CTX monitor. I'm not looking for
pretty, but if I can get it sorted out as to what I'm doing, I may
just use the Sun to replace my Win2K3 FTP server....

Thanks again,
Jason A.

Need a CD drive for SparcStation 5

Hi!

Thanks to everyone for the help on my previous keyboard issue.

Now I have a new issue. It seems the old SCSI CD drive that I got as
a freebie from someone, has died. I want to try to reload my
Sparcstation, and am trying to track down a CD drive that will work
with a Sparcstation.

So a new question:
Is there any particular brand / model of drive that will work best?
At one point, someone on one of the Sun newsgroups had commented that
Suns use an odd packet(?) size for reading from CDs, is this true? If
I pick up an older Plextor drive, with a 50-pin interface, and set it
to ID6, should it work OK?

Thanks again,
Jason A.

Hello Jason

If you're having difficulty locating Sun gear old SCSI Apple Macintosh drives work quite well. Sometimes
they are easier to find.

I have an "Apple CD 300e" and an "Apple CD 600e" working here with a SparcStation LX and an SGI Indy. One found
in a flea market and the other in a charity shop. They come in robust external enclosures with Centronix
style SCSI I interfaces.

Best regards

I have used SCSI CDROM drives from Apple Macintoshes several times. They
work fine and can be booted from etc. As the older Macs are past their use
by date now they are often easy to come by.
