Solaris 9 on an Ultra 10

Hi,

I've just been given an Ultra10, but it seems I cannot get Solaris9
installed on it.
I get something like this:
# ./W00.findswap

Scanning system disk information...

Searching disks for upgradable Solaris root devices...
./W00.findswap[3]: 322 Segmentation Fault
No Upgradable Solaris root devices were found.

Searching for locations to accommodate a temporary copy of the Solaris
installation software. Swap slices are usually erased at reboot, so it
is
preferable to place the Solaris installation software on slice labeled
swap.

No swap slices that begin at the first usable cylinder have enough space
to accommodate a temporary copy of the Solaris installation software.

Using a slice that begins at the first usable cylinder allows the most
flexibility during filesystem layout. If you are doing an initial
install and
you are not preserving any filesystems, you can re-partition a disk with
the
swap slice starting at the first usable cylinder.

Would you like to re-partition a disk? [y,n,?,q] y

Solaris 8, 9 or 10 on an Ultra 2

Having just acquired an Ultra 2 with 2x200MHz processors (IIRC they're
UltraSparc 1), a friend of mine said that Solaris 10 doesn't run on
UltraSparc 1 CPUs (and I presume anything less than this won't work with
Solaris 10 as well - this true?).

Is this the case - and if so, what's the main difference that stops
Solaris 10 working on an UltraSparc 1 CPU but not an UltraSparc 2 CPU?
(Flip side of the coin: if there's a way to make Solaris 10 work on
UltraSparc 1 CPUs, how?)

Alternately I could go for Solaris 9 - but would need to get a media kit
since I've only got Solaris 8 10/01 disks which are pretty dated now
(but still useful).

What do people out there recommend I should use - the Solaris 8 10/01
release I have, Solaris 9 (whatever the latest media release I can get
is) or Solaris 10 (if it indeed can run on this machine?). The
assumption is that I will be patching the OS with the latest patch
cluster (since it's a new install).

The machine has 2x18GB hard disks and 256MB of RAM currently (may get
more RAM - but need to find some available to somebody in Sydney,
Australia). Unless there are really cheap CPUs out there for this
machine, I won't be upgrading the CPUs in the short term.

TIA,
Phil.

If my memory serves me correctly, 'probe-ide' at the ok prompt should
work (since the hard disk is IDE).

I think it needs to be something that's OBP compatible - but has anybody
had any luck with a regular PCI SCSI card?

I bought a Symbios on ebay for a few pounds in the UK. It was a
SYM22801 which just worked on reboot on Solaris 9 on my Ultra 10
I had no problems setting up Solaris but then I did have a 120GB IDE
hard disk.

I wrote up some notes at my website www.sparc.co.uk - the install notes
are out of date and for Solaris 8 but there might be other Ultra 10
specifics there.

If you need anything specific feel free to give me a shout off list.

I now found out that apparently, the IDE-disks are not detected.
A 40 GB maxtor seems to be recognized:

ok probe-ide
  Device 0 ( Primary Master )
          ATA Model: Maxtor 34098H4

  Device 1 ( Primary Slave )
         Not Present

  Device 2 ( Secondary Master )
         Removable ATAPI Model: CRD-8322B

  Device 3 ( Secondary Slave )
         Not Present

This U10 is a real "PC" in that it seems very difficult to dis-assemble.
They must have hired someone from Compaq to design it ;-)

Ultra 10 IDE Bus

Good day to all,

the IDE bus on the ULTRA-10 is somewhat tricky, must be correctly
configured before your devices are detected.

First, as usual, there must be no master-slave conflict on the same bus (0, 1),
so check your jumpers. Also avoid cable select.
Next, to detect a slave, the master must be present!

Finally, if you want to boot from CDROM, as with Solaris install, the CD drive
must be master on the second (1) bus! Incidentally in this connection, the
Express Solaris-10 installs quite nicely on the ULTRA-10.

Good luck. K.K.

Seems to be, yes.
At least the first HD is now detected (swapping a jumper).
But it's only 4 GB ;-)
I think I'll go and try to get a supported SCSI-controller on ebay.
That way, I can put my surplus UW-drives to use - and it's probably
faster than IDE.

ISTR that the U10 doesn't do DMA.

Hi

I search for whitepapers/datasheets of the SuperSparc II in the internet, but couldn't find anything.
Only death links to www.sun.com. Could anybody help me out, with a link or the pdfs :)
I have a whitepaper for the SuperSparc I, but there are no infos about the II.

Would be great.

Thanks
