A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded it:
-rw------- 1 rafael rafael 7973432 Sep 15 01:37
reactos-0.2.4-bin.zip

Then I extracted it to a subdirectory of my home directory. I need to
know how to get it running. Is there a HOWTO somewhere? I could not
find anything (documentation, that is) within the archive itself.

I'm currently running Red Hat Linux v9. I don't have M$ on my machine.

(This list seems rather dormant. I hope I'm posting to the right place.)

RE: ReactOS 0.2.4 Released

I'm not familiar with an OS named M$. See
http://www.reactos.com/en/content/view/full/260 for
information on how to install ReactOS.

M$ is how some non-Windows users refer to Microsoft (where
the S is replaced with $).

Re: ReactOS 0.2.4 Released

The bin -taste will be dropped some time. But
it is still usable. It's intended to be startet from a naked DOS in realMode.
Thus you need at least a FAT16/32 partition to extract that and a DOS-Disk. It
should work with freedos.org, too.
Boot it,
cd reactos (whrere you extracted)
run boot.bat

That's very bad, boot.bat and friends are depreciated as they may cause
various problems - hope someone will remove these files from the
repository soon.

The only formula offered to me (for starting ReactOS) has been shot
down, even though I did not understand it completely anyway. It soundes
like Robert was saying that I need to boot with a DOS disk, be it M$
(Micro-expensive-$oft) or freeDOS, before I can run ReactOS.

Thomas says (regarding the only way offered to me) that it is very bad
and may cause various problems, but does not offer an alternative. What
kinds of problems? What alternatives are there? My original question

Re: ReactOS 0.2.4 Released

You can try to run it in Bochs or VMware, since the ISO is bootable.

You very specifically asked about the -bin.zip file. The site isn't
quite clear about this, but you'd better download the CD image or one
of the emulators with ReactOS preloaded. Either way, you really should
read

http://www.reactos.com/en/content/view/full/260

because that definitely answers even your first question.

The "boot.bat" method is a left-over from ancient days when all that was
needed to get the kernel booting was to load it into memory and start
executing it. These days, the boot loader has to do more work, e.g.
determining the configuration of the PC. Boot.bat doesn't do that and never
will.

> What alternatives are there?

The best alternative is to install from a (bootable) CD and not from the bin
distribution. The second best alternative (if you must use the bin
distribution for some reason) is to use a freeldr boot diskette. You can
download that from http://reactos.csh-consult.dk/download/freeldr.zip

No use in trying (16-bit) DOS programs, ReactOS doesn't support 16 bit
programs at all at the moment.
