64bit bootonly USB img flaw

Hello there..

I downloaded and verified the PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x64-USB-bootonly.img.bz2 then unpacked and installed it, all without problems. It seemed slow to load as I expected being from a USB thumbdrive but once it was booting, it seemed speedy, it did its probe and my display seemed to be configured nicely.

When I attempted to install from the network, I was unable.

Right after I chose the mirror and its window closed, I could not progress any further by clicking the 'next' button of the installer window. If it was stalled or working slowly, I cannot be sure since there was no feedback at all. Choosing neither DHCP/auto nor manually specifying my networking information made any difference.

On a whim, I chose to try the dvd/usb as installation media. In this attempt I was able to continue to the point where the installer discovered that the USB did not contain anything to enable such an install, which was an expected/proper failure.

Other things :

  Received an odd error during boot/load something like "cannot load, no such /dev/uhid*" though both mouse and keyboard worked fine after boot. (The next time I see this, I will try to record the message more precisely.)

  It may be due to my monitor's resolution (1920x1200) or the driver that was automatically chosen, but it seemed to me that the font used in the installer was a little difficult to read, not solely due to size.

Thanks!

PCBSD 9-CURRENT-20110701-x64 successful install on server

Testing Snapshot 9-CURRENT-20110701-x64

I'm pleased to report a successful fresh install from DVD on an HP
Proliant DL585 G1. It's key hardware includes 4 AMD Opteron
processors (8 cores total) <at> 2.66 GHz, 8 Gb Memory, Compaq 5si SCSI
Disk Array using RAID 1, Filesystem ZFS.

However, I noticed these messages on the console which followed the
X-configuration messages:

cbsd-4386 gnome-keyring-daemon [4994}: couldn't allocate secure memory
to keep passwords and or keys from being written

pcbsd-4306 pulsaudio [6676]: module.c: Failed to load module
"module-detect" (argument: ""): initialization failed.

pcbsd-4306 pulsaudio [6676]: main.c: Moduled load failed.

pcbsd-4306 pulsaudio [6676]: main.c: Failed to initialize daemon.

pcbsd-4306 pulsaudio [6676]: module.c: Failed to load module
"module-detect" (argument:  ""): initialization failed.

I was surprised to see the Gnome error message because I did not
install Gnome. I cannot say anything about the audio messages since
I do not have speakers connected to this server.

Re: Release Announcement: 9.0-BETA1: Crash confirmation please

Ok, I got the x86 version installed on a Dell 960 w/ Intel 3D Enabled.
Can anyone confirm this crash on their system:

 From desktop, open PC-BSD Control Panel > KInfoCenter > Graphical
Information > OpenGL. This seems to crash KDE and boots me back to the
login screen. In my case, Intel without 3D does the same thing.

testing of 9.0 b1

Hi,

this is feedback on PCBSD 9.0 BETA1.
I have some remarks in small quantity. Many things are absent, but the ones I test were
working for the most part.
All wishes are writing from the position of user who see PCBSD as an OS "for all comers".

Comp configuration: CPU P4 650 model; MB ASUS P5GD1Pro with on-board ICH6 sound;
NVIDIA 9400 GT; 4GB DDR-SDRAM; HD0 (WinXP/C, WinXP/D, Scientific Linux), HD1 (WinXP/E, PCBSD).

Installation: 64 bit, ZFS, KDE, NVIDIA, Base-Devil, Base-l118N.

No problems with installation.

1) First priority: the sound is present! PCM#0-PCM#3 and default were in up state.
However the old message showed up: "The audio playback device HDA Realtek ALC880 PCM#0
Digita (pcm) does not work. Failed back to default." (All that at the welcome music.)

2) KDE-menu. The possibility to place link on desktop or taskbar is missing.

3) Root-terminal does not work: there are PW request and its saving.
Next verbal instruction only is. The terminal itself is absent.
The point of this contrivance is obscure for me. How now: "if root PW is cached"?

Generally, if you'll install that unsafe thing, as a console with saved root access,
then the physical presence check is required at least.
For example, " Press key "a" " with random key. Otherwise you'll run into remote access to
that console. And you would not think so that BSD is a well-protected OS a priori.
Apple Mak OS thought so, but stopped it 3 years ago.

Dolphin with root access (without saving!) was a good thing.

4) After ADSL configuration (by GUI) my ADSL did not work.
The cause: it was saved default string "set device /dev/msk0" in ppp.conf.
After its manual replacement by "set device PPPoE:msk0:ukrtelecom"
everything became OK.

5) PPPoE does not work after lagg enabled. This case is said in Handbook,
and there is guideline: "...uncheck this box and remove any references to 'lagg'
in your /etc/rc.conf file." The 2nd part of guideline is unacceptable.
It is quite impossible: to edit config files manually. GUI only!

6) Some more about Internet. You have a box about comp visibility,
which set ppp_nat. I'd suggest 3 foolproof options instead of this:
- single comp;
- ordinary comp in local net;
- router in local net.
Then it is necessary to perform appropriate configuration.
For example of single comp:
ppp_nat="NO"
sshd_enable="NO" (and to close SSH port)
net.inet.tcp.blackhole=1
net.inet.udp.blackhole=1
net.inet.icmp.drop_redirect=1
net.inet.ip.redirect=0
net.inet.ip.forwarding=0

7) It seems you are exclusive company, who offer the screensaver 'blank screen'
with a possibility its color change. So, please, do the next step and
let user know that for TFT LCD bright white is a part load mode (not black!)
Long-term its use is able to cure some damages of LCD-layer (diffuse spots, etc).

8) Apparently ntfs-3g is absent in BETA1. Nevertheless I write about bug in
8.2 version which are very unsafe if ZFS.

The situation: I mount one of Windows disks by Dolphin; move some files thereto;
unmount this disk by Dolphin as well. After reboot and start Windows, these files
may be absent.

I think, the cause is that ZFS keep few little transactions in cache.
Dolphin contrives to unmount the disk in secret. After that ZFS cannot flush
the cache: it has nowhere to put.
Forced cache flush before unmount by Dolphin may be a solution.

Best regards
Serghey

PCBSD 9.0-BETA1 Installation Report

Testing PCBSD 9-BETA1 USB on several computers with mixed results.

1.  PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x64-USBFULL.img on HP Server succeeded:
Installation succeeded with fresh install to an HP server DL585 with four AMD Opteron CPUs (8 cores) <at> 2.66 GHz, 8 Gb Memory, HP SCSI SmartArray 5si, on SCSI drives.

2.  PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x64-USBFULL.img on HP Workstation failed:
Using the same USB stick on a different computer, the PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x64-USBFULL.img fresh install failed immediately after the boot sequence loaded BTX and identified the hard disk but before posting the memory test.  The computer was an HP xw9400 AMD Opteron CPU (dual core) with 8 Gb Memory, nVidia GForce GT 220 w/ 1Gb RAM.  Since the same USB stick was successful in installing on the DL585, it was known to work.

(However, on this HP xw9400, the DVD version of 9.0-BETA1-x64 installed without a problem.)

3.  PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x86-USBFULL.img
The Installation failed immediately.  It hung before even reaching the BTX loader message. The computer was an ASUS with AMD Athalon 64 <at> 2.2 GHz, 1 Gb RAM, Nvidia FX500, and IDE hard disk.

64bit USB img flaws.. (v9.0 beta)

Hey there folks..

Since I was unable to install from net or USB with the PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x64-USB-bootonly.img (on my USB thumbdrive), I decided to try the PCBSD9.0-BETA1-x64-USBLITE.img

The network install seems broken in the same way for both the 'bootonly' and 'USBLITE' versions:

  • Choosing network install and configuring DHCP/auto, or manual network configuration make no difference.
  • Clicking 'next' brings up the mirror selection window, either choosing one from the list or manually typing one, seem to give the same result.
  • The mirror selection window closes when clicking on its 'select' button, but then clicking on the 'next' button in the primary installer window, brings back the mirror selection window.

Installation of lite was successful when USB was chosen as the source. However, I would strongly suggest some kind of indication during this process of what the "lite" version actually installs. I realize that this information can be obtained elsewhere but I believe it should be included, possibly as part of the installation summary at least. I recommend a new heading "USB 'lite' is defined as:"

Other things:

That "slow boot/load" I mentioned in the other post was the FreeBSD/x86 bootstrap loader, and after reaching the boot menu, a further boot to the login prompt is speedy.

I managed to write down most of that odd error message (I don't recall seeing it during install/boot of previous versions), it was:
Detecting X setup
Autoconfiguring X server... ls: /dev/uhid* no such file or directory

Although the install was successful for 64bit USB 'lite' there are problems with the display configurator.  Preliminary investigation seems to imply that no changes are made. I would expect to see a difference when switching from 1900x1200 to 1600x1200, or changing drivers from radeonhd-3d-enable to radeonhd or to ati. I am unsure what I should expect, but I will keep looking into it to see if switching to an almost unusable 1024x768 would be a large enough change to notice. :)

Thanks..

New Nvidia Drivers released

Just thought I would mention that new nVivia drivers have been released.

Re: New Nvidia Drivers released

I also read the 173.xx and 96.xx legacy drivers were getting a tiny bump
soon too. It was mainly for KDE 4 and xorg-server 1.10, not that we have
to worry about that quite yet. :-)

v9 64bit USBFULL img install errors

Hey there.. my tests of the USB images continue..

I also have had critical problems with the 64bit USBFULL img install on my system: p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }a lenovo ThinkCentre a62 9705 CTO with AMD Athlon(tm) Dual Core Processor 5000B (2606.63-MHz K8-class CPU) with onboard ATI Radeon 3100 graphics.

I verified the image then installed to a USB thumbdrive and booted from it. The Bootstrap loader (btx) brought up the initial menu just fine.  After choosing to boot into pcbsd, it seemed to go smoothly. (note: more error messages appeared than I mention below, but those seem most significant)

But then this error message:

GEOM_PART integrity check failed (da0, MBR)

and later this error message:
g_vfs_done(): cd0[READ(offset=32768, length=2048)]error=6

With the final "halting" error message:
Error Mounting Install Image

I do not have another machine to test this same USB on, or I would have assumed it universally flawed had someone else not discovered a success.

Regarding the other images I attempted previously.  I have not yet fully tested alternate ftp site addresses, should those below as default options prove to be inaccurate in some way.  It was suggested to me by netSys to include "/netinstall/" as part of the directory location.

Thanks!

64 bit USB FULL INSTALL bug

I have downloaded the 64 bit USB FULL INSTALL image and after
extraction it is 4.6 gig. This will not fit on my 4 gig USB drive. I
have used this USB stick in the past with previous PC-BSD releases
successfully.
