PCBSD 8.0 Alpha 20090929 - Install Failure "no space left"

Testing PCBSD 8.0 Alpha 20090929 x86 DVD
Pentium III, 1.0GHz, 512 MB, nVidia Ti4200

Soon after the start of installation, I received this error message:

/mnt/./boot/kernel/kernelcpio: write failed: no space left on device.

Snips of output from df:

Filesystem               1k-blocks     Used     Avail     Capacity     Mounted on

/dev/ufs/ROOTFS     19150           19136   -1518    109%            /

/dev/md6                  14638                 44   1324         0%           /tmp

Re: Alpha 8.0-20090929 Available

Some quick observations before I hit the sack.

Live CD mode boots up nicely

nVidia drivers work great. - Thanks Kris

The software manager seems to be a bit problematic. Thunderbird would
start to DL and then fail. Firefox didn't completely DL the first time.
The second time I got it and it said it was installing it but it didn't.
It disappeared from the list of installed pbi programs. Opera DL'd and
installed but did not put its icon in the menu. It did however run OK.
K3b DL'd and installed but would not run.

None of the extra software was installed initially so I presume that
part is not implemented yet. I did manage to get the ports installed
after the installation and I installed Thunderbird. That is running just
fine as this is being written with it.

The Ports Console also has some problems. You can cd to some of the
directories but not to others. For instance cd /usr/ports fails with no
such file or directory message while cd /usr/sbin works just fine. The
terminal lets me cd to the directories that fail in the Ports Console.
Anyway, it is late so I will work on this again tomorrow.

Re: PCBSD 8.0 Alpha 20090929 - Install Failure "no space left"

Testing PCBSD 8.0 Alpha 20090929 x86 DVD in <Live Mode>
Pentium III, 1.0GHz, 512 MB, nVidia Ti4200

1. Loads slow - no surprise.

2. Runs slow.

3. Portsconsole -- When run from the desktop or menu icon, the program
starts, a terminal-like screen is loaded which names itself "root:sh".
 However the window disappears.

In contrast, if I start a terminal and cd/mntuzip/usr/PCBSD/portjail
and run ./portjail.sh, the terminal name changes to "portjail:csh"
There is no ports tree to test.

4. Internet works well in the live mode.

5. Screen looks good.

6. Cannot access the hard disk from Dolphin's mount function (ie., "Places").
Although a hard disk showed in Dolphin's "Places" menu, I could not
mount it. The error message says:
"Cannot access attached hd - freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure:
cannot obtain lock on /media/.hal-mtab.

This is the same hard disk where an install failed soon after starting
the installation routine, and as a result no files were copied.
However, I can mount the disk manually using the mount command in a
terminal. Thus the disk is formatted, partitioned, and labeled. It
contained only one directory, a hidden one named .snap, and it
contained no files.

After manually mounting the hard disk, it showed up in the "Recently
Plugged in Devices" program and in Dolphin's Places. Also, Dolphin
will then let me see the directories and files of the hard disk.

Yep, 512MB of ram will do that, it has to run everything from disk. If you have 3-4GB or so,
it'll take longer to bootup, but once its done, It'll run from RAM instead, which is
WAY faster :)

The ports jail is actually turned off by default in LIVE mode, I'll have to make sure to remove that
Icon from the desktop / menu :) I'm not sure it makes sense to have it on, since when running in
memory you won't have enough space to download / build ports and such.

I'll take a look into this, probably needs /media created on the mfsroot image

Humm, according to this, it sounds like the disk failed to mount to /mnt, and this filled up your '/' partition.

Did you choose to install to the entire disk, or to a partition? Also, try booting again, and open up "xterm"
can you
mount your disk / partition to /mnt manually?

Try changing the Mirror in the configuration, maybe its losing connection
to the mirror its using now? Also, those PBIs are still versions from 7.x,
so they will probably not all run properly. We'll be starting to build
8.0 ones here very soon :)

That is correct, the ports-console is running inside a jail. The only shared directories
between it and your system is /home and /tmp, everything else is seperate, so you don't
have to worry about breaking your system. To get started in it, just run "portsnap fetch extract update"
within the port-console, and begin making ports.

I kind of figured that, but had the mirror set to auto. Will play with
that.

Having never played with a jail system before I had not realized that.
I now have it working and thanks...

1.  I chose "fresh install" and the entire disk (30 Gb).

2. Yes.  I can mount my partition manually.  In message 5 (of Vol 33, Issue 1, October 1, 2009 <at> 9:37 AM) I reported:

>>6. Cannot access the hard disk from Dolphin's mount function (ie., "Places").

3.  Here is a big surprise re the Video card.  After attempting another install, and experiencing a freeze after opening up a terminal and issuing the command "dmesg", I replaced the legacy nVidia card (Ti 4200 - 64 Mb) with a legacy ati (Rage II AGP, 64 Mb) and began an install.  The install worked with the ati.  As remote as it seems, I wonder if there is an issue between my problems, the nVidia card, and X.  I will try the nVidia card in two ways:  (1) I will test the nVidia card in another system or two to make sure it is working, and (2) I will put in the nVidia card back into my PCBSD 8.0 alpha machine now that the system is installed, and run the install video driver routine from the welcome screen to see if things freeze.

Re: PCBSD 8.0 Alpha 20090929 x86 ports

Re: System Kernel and Ports.

I suppose these two items are related because a config file somewhere
identifies that the kernel as FreeBSD 7:

1. Although the System Manager correctly reports that the operating
system is PCBSD 8.0 Alpha, deeper into System Manager -> System
Settings -> Tasks, it reports that the kernel is "FBSD7.0-PCBSD7.0
(Standard PCBSD Kernel for 7.0"

2. If you run "portsnap fetch extract update" within the port-console
it retrieves the ports tree, but it appears to be FreeBSD 7's port
tree. It is also very bi-polar since you can find that Opera is at
release 10 (the newest) while Firefox is only at version 2.x (not so
new).
