Re: FF3.5.2 runs slower on PCBSD than Windows?

Is Firefox PBI compiled with thread support?

Beats me.  I think I may have cut off the rest of the report too soon.

I think that even if FreeBSD supports multi-cores, any given app isn't going to necessarily benefit from having 8 cores.  The real advantage is in running many parallel processes and applications well without impacting overall system speed. So I have a feeling that running Firefox for example, only uses one core to do the basic stuff.

Why only seven cores?

I see one core set as BSP (core 0)...is that just how FreeBSD works?

Comparing geekbench to Core i7 Mac Pros you are getting maybe...two cores worth of power, maybe three. The client is only 32-bit in the ports and it does use the linux compatibility, my system is scoring 3495 so you are write to wonder.

What is the output from dmesg?

OO 3.1.1 just went final so maybe there's some tuning they did with the point release. 3.1 does run a bit laggy on my old clunker abuse box as well.

I should also point out that running FF3.5.2 on a 4 year old Toshiba laptop with a 1.5Ghz processor and 1.2 GB RAM with XP actually loads Gmail faster by a hair.  Opening a small text doc in OO takes about 20 seconds on PCBSD but 24 seconds on the laptop.

Very disappointed so far.

Have you tried installing geekbench with runports? I can provide some performance metrics to compare against my system:
AMD Athlon X2 5000+ BE <at> 2.9GHz
4GB RAM
2x 7200RPM 320GB WD RAID 0
Asus M2N-E
GeForce 7600GT
PC-BSD 7.1.1 - AMD64

I built what should have been a kick-ass system with:

Intel i7-920
6GB RAM
RAID-0 7200RPM drives
Asus  P6T Motherboard - (Intel on-board RAID)
Radeon HD-4250 VGA
PCBSD 64Bit

But in various benchmarks it comes up short every time.

I just ran this browser test and I scored 1296 pts using FF3.5.2 VS double that running on Windows ??  It's not clear what OS the average results came from, but I presume it was Vista.

My benchmark results breakdown:

Rendering - 1247
Social networking - 1833
Complex graphics - 3134
Data - 1714
DOM operations - 1264
Text parsing - 741

I did some other OS benchmarks too recently, and was similarly underwhelmed.  Anyone have a clue why?  Anyone else done any benchmarking?

This machine is sucking up 175 Watts in electricity and I don't appear to be getting my money's worth.  Bumming...

Its compiled with whatever the default is for the www/firefox35 port. If you want to take a look at those
options, feel free. If you have suggestions on changing them, I'm all ears :)

8.0 ALPHA for your inspection

Testers,

We've gotten a PC-BSD 8.0 ALPHA ISO to the point where the brave can begin to take a look at some of it's
new features, and test out the new FreeBSD 8 on your hardware. This release is for 32bit only, after FreeBSD 8.0
is released we'll begin the amd64 builds as well. Also, we have not begun to build the PBI tree for 8.0, and will
do so after FreeBSD 8.0 releases. However, you can still install 7.x PBIs on 8.0, but they may not all
perform properly.

*WARNING* *WARNING* *WARNING*

This is obviously a very early alpha build, so expect plenty of bugs and missing features. This is mainly
a release for previewing what's to come, we will begin a more serious bug hunt after we finish implementing all
the new features for 8.0.

*WARNING* *WARNING* *WARNING*

Re: 8.0 ALPHA for your inspection

OK, a couple of problems right off the bat. First, the nVidia drivers
are a no go for me. I get to the configuration screen and select my
settings. When I click on apply I get the normal box about testing the
settings and I then get the black text screen. After a few seconds I
get an error message. link_elf: Symbol dev2unit undefined and then
the system reboots. It does boot just fine if I select the nv driver.
I tried the latest three nVidia drivers in the list and the all give
the same error message. Second, it doesn't look like any of the
programs I selected to install during the installation process
actually installed. Also, up date manager says it can't connect to the
server.

On a positive note this alpha provided the incentive I needed to blow
away my Windows 7 RC install. Thanks for that at least Kris. :-)

Re: 8.0 ALPHA for your inspection

Opps, thanks for reminding me of that. I should have remember to put it
in the e-mail I sent. The nvidia drivers don't work yet, am waiting for
FBSD 8.0-Release to hit before I regen them all. Also the PBIs aren't
included, so optional components wont work just yet. I will also
start building PBIs once 8.0-Rel hits, that way they are built
on the final ABI.
