Does anyone know if exFAT is planned on being supported in 7.2 / 8.0?

Seeing as how the peeps in Redmond are always putting bandages on things,
I was wondering if anyone out there has heard of exFAT/FAT64 support being
worked on for 7.2 or 8.0 BSD?

I saw a brief blurb about exFAT/FAT64 support on Linux being cobbled together
here: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NzAzMg

A guy wrote a patch for Linux here:
http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0901.3/02305.html

Re: BSD 7.1RC1 Finally!

Any word on a 7.1 release yet?
It would be nice to be able to play with KDE 4.2.......

Yes, 4.1.3 will be in the 7.0.2 patch.

Here's a peak at the changelog for 7.0.2:

Soon! :)

Its taken me a bit longer than expected, since the update to xorg 7.4
broke several things, and causes a new slew of problems which I've been
trying to get fixed up first, so you can at least get to a workable
desktop. KDE 4.2 seems to work pretty well though!

I'm testing another alpha candidate tonight, if it's working well enough
I'll release it right away, otherwise it'll be a few days still.

I've not really heard anything about it yet. You may want to ask around
the FreeBSD mailing lists to see if somebody already has started on it,
or plans on adding it in the future :) It would probably be nice to have
it sooner rather than later, and if you ask right away, maybe we can get
it done soon.

Re: Does anyone know if exFAT is planned on being supported in 7.2 / 8.0?

Agreed... considering that FAT64 is not to difficult of a file system, I would expect a driver with read and write capability within the next year. Heck I can see support for it merged with the kernel by 2010.

Kris,

I've been loosely following 7.4 / 1.5.3 development and on the surface it
appears there may be a 1.5.4 bugfix release coming down the pipe since
server 1.6 is delayed by 5 weeks + already.

For what may become 1.5.4, I see 8 patched merged and six proposed.
http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/Server15Branch

7.4 was a pretty big change so no surprise it broke some stuff. 1.6 is going
to be a major change since it's been sliced and diced and had a lot of legacy
code purged. It should be fun to see what that breaks. >:-}

Do you have any specifics on what broke in 7.4? Not that I can fix them
or anything, just curious. :-D

PC-BSD 7.1 Alpha1 is up!

Hey all,

Sorry it took so long to get this out and ready, the Xorg update to 7.4
caused a new slew of problems which I had to fix before even getting us
to alpha quality. Anyway, here's the DVD ISO for 32bit to play with:

ftp://ftp.pcbsd.org/pub/alpha-iso/PCBSD7.1-ALPHA1-x86-DVD.iso
MD5 (PCBSD7.1-ALPHA1-x86-DVD.iso) = 1de22b5129211e745ec53bb9fceea7fd

Highlights:

FreeBSD 7.1-Stable
Xorg 7.4
KDE 4.2

NOTE:

This is ALPHA quality, expect bugs, but please report them to help us
improve the software. This will require a fresh install, the upgrade
portion will be working later on, after we get our new System Installer
committed and included.

Thanks for testing!

Xorg 7.4 broke some of the options we use for Nvidia drivers, broke the
X -configure portion, so that it doesn't get a working xorg.conf
anymore, some Rgb settings broke X as well, and to top it off, the
moused / HAL setup caused lots of problems with it, that seem to have
been mostly resolved in ports now :)
