1.5.1 Notes


Everybody,

The 32bit ISO's for 1.5.1 are on their way to the mirrors, and the 64bit 
ones will follow later tonight. I've also made a PBI patch and 
online-update from 1.5 to 1.5.1, which are on their way to the mirrors. 
I'm attaching a copy of the release notes / changelog for inspection. 
Let me know if anything appears missing.

For the most part, this is a more standard release, just bug-fixes and 
new packages for all to enjoy. Also the translations have been updated, 
since our translators have been hard at work to finish up several of them.

Now that we've moved into our new place, and stabilized a bit, we'll be 
able to re-enable the tri-weekly builds here very soon. I want to start 
building with FreeBSD 7.0 as the base OS, so we can start testing and 
beating up any bugs which may appear from the jump up. I'll post an 
announcement once these are ready to go.

Also of note:

* I will be mentoring a student this summer for SoC to fix up some bugs 
that exist in the BSD version of wine.

* We've convinced CrossOver to create a build of CrossOver Games for 
PC-BSD, and a build of CrossOver office should follow soon. (Please 
signup and vote for FreeBSD to help them devote resources to improving 
support!)

* TheXorg GUI tool will be getting an update here soon, with support for

Looks good, glad to see a the changes to roots kde settings as well, I
remember testing NPM as root on a 1.4.1 box and even the qt styles
looked horried, let along the kde ones.. lol.

i have already fixed a bug in the sound_detect binary  ,  i have
tested successfully en fbsd 7   , i just commited the changes to trunk

PCBSD 1.5.1 Installation Hangs after startx, spontaneous reboots

Testing PCBSD fresh install on Acer Laptop,  Travelmate 4001LCi, P4 "M" <at> 1.5Ghz,  2048 Mb Ram, Intel 855 chipset & Intel videochip.  Acer BIOS is version 3A10.

Although PCBSD 1.4, 1.4.1 and 1.5 have all been successful in making fresh installations to this computer, the recent 1.5.1 release is hanging after startx the rebooting.  I get to the grey crosshatched x screen and the mouse moves in response to mouse or touchpad.  After 15 seconds the computer spontaneously reboots.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 to console shows the last entries are:


Detecting X Setup
Autoconfiguring X Server done
g_vfs done: <can't read rest because it goes by too fast>

* * *
segment fault

* * *
pid 982


After that, it reboots

It makes no difference whether I start in the default mode, the no-ACPI mode, or the VESA mode.

This is a follow-up to the earlier message regarding PCBSD 1.5.1 Installation Hangs after startx, spontaneous reboots.  The purpose of this post is to report that the 1.5.1 pbi upgrade method was also unsuccessful on this laptop.

In my previous post, I had reported that version 1.5 installed fine, but a "fresh install" of version 1.5.1 had hung during installation at startx and spontaneously rebooted.  To try and workaround this problem and get to version 1.5.1, I reinstalled PCBSD 1.5 to the laptop, confirmed it was working fine.  It did.  No problems.  However, after that I downloaded the system update to 1.5.1 and its installation failed.

The 1.5.1 upgrade started fine and went through the "removing packages" initial portion.  However, it began to hang in an endless loop after about 15 minutes.  The messages on the screen said:

The last four commands cycled again and again, but I shut down the computer after an hour.

Kaffeine plug-in and Skype 1.4 PBI

Hi all,

I have found these two regressions after upgrading from PC-BSD 1.5 to PC-BSD 
1.5.1.

Under PC-BSD 1.5 it was possible to watch the trailers at 
http://www.apple.com/trailers. After the upgrade to PC-BSD 1.5.1 the Kaffeine 
plug-in in Konqueror stopped working. It still appears under about:plugins 
though.

Skype 1.4.0.118_4 installed with the PBI also stopped working after the 
upgrade to PC-BSD 1.5.1. It crashes after signing in with the following 
message:

terminate called after throwing an instance 
of 'Skype::Exceptions::GetObjectError'
  what():  CallMember
Abort trap                                                                                                                                     

Skype 1.2 from ports still works in PC-BSD 1.5.1.

I haven't tried Skype yet, but the movie trailers play fine in  
Kaffieine on mine. I did a clean install of 1.5 and a pbi upgrade to  
1.5.1...

I was able to confirm the first problem with playing trailers, the same 
thing happened on my system here.

To fix, do this as root:

# cd /usr/local/share/services/
# rm kaboodle*
* Restart KDE*

Whats happening is that kaboodle is trying to play the movies, instead 
of kmplayer or kaffeine. Removing these services fixes the issue.

As for Skype, the PBI works great on my system which I've upgraded from 
1.5 -> 1.5.1 also. Can you try re-installing the PBI, and deleting the 
.Skype folder to confirm?

PCBSD7 Alpha Test Available


I've just finished uploaded a very early test release of PC-BSD7, which 
is based off of FreeBSD 7.0 release. You may note that that we have 
named it PCBSD7, and this is on purpose. We will be changing our 
versioning scheme for this next release to correspond with FreeBSD, thus 
PC-BSD 7.0 will be based off of FreeBSD 7.0, PC-BSD 7.1 on FreeBSD 7.1, 
and so forth. This should help make it obvious as to what version of BSD 
we are running, and keep us more in line with FreeBSD itself.

This release is a ALPHA, which means it is NOT feature complete yet, and 
should only be used for early testing. I know for a fact most PBI's will 
NOT work on it, since I haven't yet implemented all the legacy library 
support from FreeBSD 6. If you are able to test this release, what I'm 
most interesting in is feedback as to hardware support, or installation 
problems. I.E. If there is something that works in FreeBSD 7.0, but does 
not appear to be working in PC-BSD, please let us know so we can get it 
fixed.

p4 will MFC to RELENG_7?

I have 3 notebooks and they all have either iwn or the nrw rt2860 (ral)
