Cannot Load CDROM

Hi,

I have, for a few days been trying to figure out what could be the problem with my system. Out of no where, I cannot seem to read any CD's; music or data.

Any CD that I place in the cdrom drive, I cannot read it. I have tried to force a mount from console but I end up with the mount command remaining in a frozen state forever. I cannot even kill -9 or kill -KILL the mount command.

The only change that I had was to install java.

I have tried to stop hald from probing the cd drive, but I end up with no symlink found between cd0 and cdrom0.

Any ideas on this?

PS: I was tempted to upgrade to the latest FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE, but came across a thread that suggests *not* to go down this road doe to numerous custom configs. Is there an availability of an upgrade PCBSD-way?

Of course, you might discount this possibility, but remember that one in
a million chances happen 99% of the time.

Re: Cannot Load CDROM

Need some more info about your system.  Perhaps a dmesg, uname -a, and any messages from /var/log would be nice.

Re: Cannot Load CDROM

Hi Quyen,

Unfortunately, there were no error being dumped to /var/log/messages. I tailed this file while trying to mount CD's but could not. I rebooted countless times but same thing.

uname -a:

FreeBSD trinity 8.1-RC1 FreeBSD 8.1-RC1 #2: Mon Jun 14 18:21:27 UTC 2010     root-NlbZGBzVLVc1zZj5XKaobkB+6BGkLq7r@public.gmane.org:/usr/obj/storage/builds/pcbsd-build81-x64/fbsd-source/8.1/sys/PCBSD  amd64

Attached is my dmesg file. I got this at 1830HRS, I had plugged in a CD at 1825 and a USB stick about 1800 HRS

Thanks

Re: Cannot Load CDROM

Tis very odd problem.  You should try to disable hald and leave KDE and try to mount from console only.

Regarding upgrade, you can upgrade via the PCBSD own system update notice.

I'll continue trying to figure out where the problem is.

Yes it is.... I did disable hald but got no joy. I'll try that with dbus and polkitd disabled and let you know how it does.

Regarding upgrade, you can upgrade via the PCBSD own system update notice.

I did... on my desktop... there is a mail to this list about that with a loud yelp for help :-)... I seemed to have lost my kernel with an upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1... and I always check for any system updates from the Update manager every morning.

Lost kernel/partitions upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1

Hi....

It seems that I have had an interesting week. I was upgrading my desktop, which had PCBSD 8.0 to PCBSD 8.1. My initial configuration had a custom partitioning,

/ -- 2GB UFS
/var -- 4GB (journaled and geli'd)
/usr -- 50GB (journaled and geli'd)
/tmp -- 512M UFS
/work -- 180 (ZFS)

The upgrade claimed to have gone well, I did not see any re-partitioning or formatting going on. When I rebooted, I ended up with an error

Unable to load a kernel
|
'Can't load kernel'
Type '?' for a list of commands, 'help' for more detailed help.
OK

When I run ls, I can see the boot directory and there is no kernel directory there in. I have booted into live mode and I can see the partitions of the previous installation, only that when I run fdisk <device> I get "fdisk: invalid fdisk partition table found "

I have a backup of my keys for geli... any ideas on how to miraculously recover from this :-)...

PS: My concern is if there was any modification on the partitions when the upgrade happened, then I may never recover my data :-(

PPS: I am tempted, if I can find a way, to copy over my kernel folder from my laptop to my desktop.

Re: Lost kernel/partitions upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1

You seem to have one bad problem after another.

The upgrade via PCBSD own system update is binary diffs...it shouldn't touch your partition layout or the MBR.

Maybe Kris can shed some light about this.

In the mean time, bsdlabel the device to see the partition layout.  Maybe you might want to write down the information in case you need to recreate the partitions in the exact positions

Re: Lost kernel/partitions upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1

Kris, any light you can shed on this... I'll give this my best shot to recover. It appears that the disks were not formatted and no new partitions were created. Just that the offsets being messed up and the fact that the kernel went missing. if I dd the partitions and pass them to hd, I can see the data still intact... albeit cant quite make sense of it, thanks to geli :-)

I have re-run the PCBSD CD but I have no disks to select in the upgrade.

Re: Canon LBP7200Cdn printer; automake

Thanks to people who have made suggestions about the Canon LBP7200Cdn
printer. I now have one and am printing through Windows, but not
through CUPS on PCBSD. The ppd file supplied by Canon is fine, but
there is no backend for PCBSD. The ppd file expects a filter
/usr/local/lib/cups/filter/pstocapt3 to translate the postscript to
CAPT, the Canon printer language. I've tried:

(1) Compiling the source as supplied by Canon for this, but it does not compile:

........
/usr/local/share/automake-1.9/am/depend2.am: am__fastdepCC does not
appear in AM_CONDITIONAL
/usr/local/share/automake-1.9/am/depend2.am: AMDEP does not appear in
AM_CONDITIONAL
Running autoconf ...
configure.in:2: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
      See the Autoconf documentation.
configure.in:3: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_CONFIG_HEADER
configure.in:13: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_PROG_LIBTOOL
Running ./configure ...
./configure: 1779: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
make: no target to make.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/home/rob/BuyStuff/Printers/Canon/CAPT_Printer_Driver_for_Linux_V200_uk_EN/Src/cndrvcups-capt-2.00.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the "automake" system to
diagnose this problem.

(2) I tried installing the RPM package, by following the FreeBSD
handbook instructions. This is fine, it installs pstocapt3 into
/compat/linux/usr/lib/cups/filter and I can brandelf it, and put a
symlink into /usr/local/libexec/cups/filter that FreeBSD needs.
However, pstocapt3 needs libcups.so.2, but the FreeBSD version of this
shared library is not satisfactory (I had to put a symlink into /lib
for it to be picked up):

./pstocapt3: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libcups.so.2:
ELF file OS ABI invalid

I don't understand this error.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can go from here - either
compiling from the source (preferable), or getting either the RPM or
DEB versions going? Thanks very much for any help.

Cheers,
Rob Hurle

Re: Canon LBP7200Cdn printer; automake

Google shows that others have also failed to compile this.

I see that it is a network printer. Does installing cups-bjnp (http://www.freshports.org/print/cups-bjnp/) help at all?

If not, it may be useful to email dinoex-HZy0K5TPuP5AfugRpC6u6w@public.gmane.org to see if he knows which bit needs to be added to the FreeBSD cups port to get the required backend.

Cheers,

Dru
