[PC-BSD Support] PC-BSD Not Ready for Primetime Yet

Download ISO. Burned. Tried to install
overwriting XUbuntu. Said it had overwritten
partitions. Nope. On install, every single
command showed an error message. Went on
for about half an hour before I stopped it.

Ran DOS "fdisk /mbr" to kill all partitions.

Re-ran install. Networking wouldn't config
automatically. Tried Manual. "/stand/sysinstall"
doesn't work. "cd /usr/sbin; sysinstall" does.
PCBSD couldn't find Ethernet port on Asus M2NPV-VM.
XUbuntu did. Windows did.

Oh well. Guess I'll just reinstall Winblows.
Nice try anyway, guys.

[PC-BSD Support] thank you

Thanks for a wonderful idea, and 'product'.
I installed it on my 24 year old daughter's friend's old Dell laptop that was W2000 dead.
It's opened her ideas to such great things as gimp - as she's an artist.

Most awesome.

If you are looking for my 'wish' list, it would be
freebsd with xfce ...
with 'few' apps, as your installer worked great, for the casual user

Thanks again.

[PC-BSD Support] mute button freezes system

Just installed PC-BSD on my laptop. Looks pretty good so far. However,
when I hit the mute button of the laptop, the system freezes. Mouse
movement and keypresses are lost. Also, I am unable to switch ttys (e.g.,
Ctrl-Alt-F1).

What should I do to narrow down the problem?

[PC-BSD Public] us (qwerty) keymap on the console even if you choose a Belgian keymap during installation (fixed)

Hello,

I have experience in Linux and BSD, and I gave PC-BSD a try last saturday. What I like about PC-BSD is that it's very easy to install and to use for the "layman".

But, I have found a "major" flaw:
When I switch to the virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2, and so on), I can't log on, with any user.
After scratching my head, I found out the reason is that I'm typing the password on a US (QWERTY) keyboard. After finally logging in (with some password that has only numbers, no letters) I found out that indeed on the console you're in the US (QWERTY) keymap. And with all the virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2, and so on..)

But I have found the solution :)

Since I have a FreeBSD 6.2 box handy, I have looked into its /etc/rc.conf.

The solution is to add, on the PC-BSD machine,  in the file /etc/rc.conf
keymap="be.iso"

One might argue that the "layman" would probably not do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and type commands, and that it will only use the GUI. Well, maybe :)

Greetings,

Thanks! I've added this to be enabled if you choose Belgian now :)

[PC-BSD Support] mute button freezes system

Thanks for getting back to me (and sorry for the slow response,
I mistakenly thought I was signed up for the list and so I only
just read this from the website archive).

The laptop is an IBM Thinkpad X41. From wandering around various
lists, I think I've figure out the problem. I installed PC-BSD
while the laptop was hooked up to the laptop dock, but then tried
to run the laptop unhooked from the dock. When it is hooked up to
the dock everything works. Without the dock, the system freezes
when you hit the mute button or plug/unplug the power. Also will
fail intermittently in bootup. There are a references around to
others having problems with the FreeBSD kernel and laptop docks
(see http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dpelleg/X31_freebsd.html). I've
installed FreeBSD-7.0-current, which appears contains acpi_dock.
The system now boots and runs without any problems. I've seen
it mentioned that the ATA bus for the dock could be disabled, but
since I need the dock this isn't a viable option for me.

I'll try PC-BSD again with my laptop after it moves to FreeBSD 7.0.
In the meantime, I'll probably give it a go with my desktop.

Cheers,
   Jim
