Darwin 8.0.1 x86 under Qemu/VPC

Hello folks,

I'm new fella here and I'd like to ask if anybody has successfully installed Darwin 8.0.1 x86
under Qemu 0.7.1 on PPC Tiger /or Project Q I use/ or VPC 7.0.2. 

I'd like to possibly switch some of my FreeBSD server boxes into Darwin x86 to demonstrate
that Darwin OS is for server purposes as good as his cousins *BSDs or Linux OS. But before
realizing this idea I want to get into Darwin x86 under some emu./virt. software.

Qemu problem:

CPU: x86
Option: platform=x86 -v
Darwin freezes after kernel has been loaded.

CPU: x86-64
Option: platform=x86 -v
Surprisingly it's booting and installation runs with uncompression errors on .tar.bz2 packages. 
/packages are not corrupted/. Booting after whole installations ends is not successful, Darwin is
missing some dylibs as libncurses etc.. 


VPC problem:

Hard to tell, VPC hangs with "Unrecoverrable CPU Error" when kernel loading.


I use Tiger on PB and I'd be thankful for any advice. Thx, Don Martinello.

I'm not sure wether it's a good idea to take Darwin 8.0.1 to  
demonstrate a stable production system. The binary Darwin 8.0.1  
release was made Apple internally, before the corresponding sources  
reached the public and is known to have quirks. It can't be re-built  
from public sources, either.

Alternatives would be the Darwin 7.2.3 release from OpenDarwin or to  
build a current system on your own. The darwinbuild tool seems to  
have become quite usable recently and possibly some of the others on  
this list have an (almost) complete build available privately, already.

I wanted to take the latest Darwin OS public release, but it seems it's not a best idea yet :). Well then I'll go for

Since there is a nice package from Mike Kronenberg and Andreas Meier called "Project Q", now it's not such a
big deal with Qemu :) on Mac. Take a look at http://www.kberg.ch/q for further info. Personaly I use commercial
VPC because it's much faster on MAC than Qemu is, but since M$ bought Connectix VPC has some weird
features-limitations /such as memory limit to 512MB for each virt. machine/ and 7.0.2 hangs more than version
6 I used before.

I creating to compile X11ForMacOSXSource but I don't succeed because I don't have the  X11LibApple package installed.

Where can I find this package for x86 ? Could you send me a link or the package itself ?

You mean this: http://www.opendarwin.org/downloads/7.2.1/org.opendarwin.X11-7.2
.1-1.i386.rpm
?

Of course that won't do you much good if you aren't running OPENdarwin (as 
opposed to the various other versions of darwin)

You mean this:
http://www.opendarwin.org/downloads/7.2.1/org.opendarwin.X11-7.2
.1-1.i386.rpm
?

Of course that won't do you much good if you aren't running OPENdarwin
(as opposed to the various other versions of darwin)

odcctools and pmac g4

hallo all,
i' m andrea from italy and have a problem with odcctools.
wen i try to make on my powermac g4 (dual g4  <at> 450, the "gigabit  
ethernet" model), with tiger 10.4.2 (darwin 8.2.0) and xcode tools  
2.1, i obtain this error:
bytesex.c: In function 'swap_i386_thread_fpstate':
bytesex.c:1316: error: 'struct <anonymous>' has no member named  
'environ'
bytesex.c:1316: error: 'struct <anonymous>' has no member named  
'environ'    (and so on..)
how can correct this?

and another question: can i use odcctools to recompile xnu instead  
cctools provided by apple?

This is fixed in odcctools CVS. However, CVS seems down at the moment.

I wouldn't recommend it. In fact, odcctools doesn't install some of  
the libraries you'd need like libkld.a, so you'd still need a full  
version of Apple cctools.
