can't compile lsof

I can't install lsof under Tiger (Darwin 8.1) because lsof don't know

lsof needs special work for Mac OS X to build properly (as you've
noticed); I haven't had the time to update it for newer versions of
the OS. Note, however, that 10.4 actually has a newer version of
lsof (4.73) than the port (4.70).

py-rdiff-backup 0.12.8

Is anyone using rdiff-backup 0.12.8, installed using Darwin Ports?

The latest version in Darwin Ports is 0.12.7 (excluding the devel
variant, which is 0.13.4) but the 0.12.8 upstream changelog indicates
that a rather serious (ie. potential data loss) bug was fixed in 0.12.8

It seems that the existing Portfile can simply be edited to contain the
new version and md5sum, but I don't understand why the maintainer
(rshaw <at> opendarwin.org) hasn't hasn't updated the port (I've looked in
CVS as well).

I couldn't find any Bugzilla entries relating to "rdiff", so I'll open
one soon. Just wanted to see if anyone else had thoughts on the matter
first.

Cheers

Subscribing to post but not receive

I use the Gmane mailing list to news gateway (http://news.gmane.org) to
read the Darwin Ports mailing list (ML), but since posting to the list
is limited to subscribers, I am now receiving emails from the list.

Is there no option to subscribe to post, but not receive?

mlmmj (http://mlmmj.mmj.dk/) supports nomail subscriptions, which allow
you to subscribe to an individual ML for posting but not receiving.

This does not seem possible in Mailman (which is used by
opendarwin.org). However, I know Gnome use Mailman, and they have a ML
called "postonly", which you can subscribe to and gain posting
privileges for all Gnome MLs. I could not find any such list at
http://www.opendarwin.org/mailman/listinfo

If anyone else is reading this list through a news gateway, I would love
to hear from you. I know I can always filter the ML messages as a last
resort, but I'd rather do it "properly", if that is possible.

Thanks

Andrew

Few questions

Hello,
i have (succesfully i think) installed a running X11
on a powerbook under tiger, and AfterStep, which is
my favourite wm for more than 10 years now, is
running. I just have a little trouble with it :
i start X11 from the dock (not with startx), and
usually, as soon as i try to pull a menu, it shuts
down. This happens twice, and the third time everything
runs smoothly... Strange isn't it? Do any of
you have an explanation?
Furthermore, i have an almost running xemacs, but with
the impossibility to open dialog boxes like "open file".
I just cannot find somewhere to set the right paths
for xemacs to work (and hilight TeX, for instance). If
anyone would know, i would be very glad to fix that
problem.

Thanks,
JYB.

I was wondering the same thing myself, but didn't want to say anything
because I'm new.

Having glanced over the docs the past weekend, it appears that Apple
wants you to put them in /Library/Widgets or /Users/*/Library/Widgets,
for whatever that's worth.

Are these worth making infrastructure for? Generally speaking, they're
a few bits of html, css, and javascript with a few images - nothing to
port, per se. It would make DP basically a distribution mechanism for
these, although I can see the attraction because it means one doesn't
have to visit Apple's website in order to find (relatively) trustable
new things.

Ah, another classic debate. Fink has had this argument several times
as well, although over a wider variety of subjects.

You do raise a good point that dp should define what it will and
won't manage. I have been on the side of a single, consistent
interface to installing and removing software. If it doesn't
need to be compiled, has no deps, and nothing depends on it,
it should be the simplest possible case to support.

The real error is here. Make just continues and gets another error later
which was caused by the fact that libui.a was not made because ui.c has bugs
when compiled with gcc4.0 which (unlike gcc3.3) will not allow a construct
such as

extern int foo; /* in a header file */
[...]
static int foo; /* in another file that included the above */

Isn't this showing up quite a bit with gcc4.0?

Also, isn't there a problem with g++4.0 with classes that had looser context
checks under g++3.3 but now fail? Mozilla 1.7.8 fails under g++4.0 for
example, but not under g++3.3 (both for OS X 10.4.1). The only errors are
that a class is not not available in a specific context.

gcc-4.0 portdir

Hi Dan! Just a small question about your odgcc40 port. Any reason it
lives in a gcc-4.0/ portdir? ${portname} and ${portdir} should always
be in sync, problems may arise in the registry if they're not.

Other than that, cool port! ;-)
