Hi Guido! Good suggestion, I'll adapt this later on with the
appropriate current --> numbered-tarball filesystem level symlink. In
the mean time the links themselves are just named "dmg", "tar.bz2" and
"tar.gz", so there's no confusion there on the user end.

Just as a HEADSUP for the entire list, both the "getdp" site and the
"DarwinPorts 1.0" news entry item on the front page have been updated
again to reflect Jordan's most welcomed dmg image. Appropriate
installation instructions follow each installation method. Please
review/comment/praise/flame/≤whatever> so that I can make the
appropriate adjustments.

If we also help Kevin get DPGUI 0.3 out the door, added to Jordan's
1400 or so Tiger packages, I think we'll be good to go for some kind of
wider announcement, Mac OS X's downloads area & slashdot, but I think I
already said that...

Problem installing mysql4 on Tiger + DP 1.0

Hello all-

I've installed DP 1.0 from scratch (kept a backup of my old install
thankfully) and I was able to install all but one of the ports I need
successfully. The problem is with the mysql4 port, it won't compile.
Here is the error (FYI, I get the same exact error trying to port
install mysql5):

pkg target

Could somebody familiar with the pkg target comment on bug #2989
please? It looks to me like this bug just reflects general breakage
in the pkg target when dealing with abstract dependencies, but I want
to make sure.

banned from irc channel

I get the following message when I try to join the #opendarwin channel:

JOIN #opendarwin
474: #opendarwin You're banned from that channel

I am able to connect to other channels on the same server without any
problems.

Can someone clue me in on what is going on? I am not familiar with the
inner workings of IRC. Is it banning me based on IP, nick, something
else entirely?

Thanks,
yon.

I should clarify that I have never connected to this channel before.

Yeah, yeah, I'm working on it... feel free to beat me to it, though.

Re: DarwinPorts launchd support: design review

Hi James,

I haven't looked at launchd in detail yet, but would is it possible to:
-install launchd on MacOS 10.3?
-launch it as a child process of init?

Or asking more directly: Would it be possible to make use of launchd
on 10.3/Darwin7 e. g. by starting a darwinports installed launchd
via a startup script? (of course w/o messing up the OS)

Hey Markus,

I don't think I would choose to go there. But to answer your
question...maybe. I've looked at the launchd sources only a little
bit. It relies on kqueue/kevent, so it certainly wouldn't go back to
10.2. I don't know for sure if launchd relies on any 10.4
technologies that aren't in 10.3.

I guess you could try to build launchd on 10.3 and see what happens.
It doesn't seem worth it to me. The value in having DP support
launchd on Tiger is that people will become used to using launchd on
Tiger. There is no corresponding pull for having DP support launchd
on Panther.
