Hi Landon. Why is the non-X11 ethereal variant problematic? That
really beats me! And why I prefer tethereal over tcpdump? Simple, very
simple... I don't like tcpdump! First time I used it I didn't like the
way it handles the packets according to the flags passed, didn't enjoy
the way it displays the output either. That kept me from using it and
reading its man page, which in turn meant I didn't learn to use it very
well. During all this I had recollections of tethereal and how I liked
it in my Linux days, and then I discovered the port is offered through
DarwinPorts.... Added are two facts: one, I have a small drive; second,
I'm not an X11 fan. So why add all that overhead for something that
I'll be using only at the command line? See my point?
And what I was thinking is that it is nice to offer the choice, for
those who don't want to use ethereal the simple option to only build
tethereal is there, offered right out of the box! Currently you can do
it by hacking the local copy of the Portfile, but you risk screwing
something up if you don't know what you're doing (as it actually
happened to me!). Hope that explains it!
Regards,...
Juan
