Auto-setting mime types
I've noticed when copying files from other file systems (for example, the FAT32 on a USB key), files with a .pl extension get marked as text/plain, even though when I check in File Types, .pl is not under text/plain, but under text/source-code. However, .py files, which show up in the same place in File Types, get marked as text/source-code. This seems to indicate that the data from File Types is NOT what's being used to auto-set the mime types on files copied from other file systems. So how does this data get set, and how can I change it? I'm getting really tired of having to manually set the mime type every time I copy a .pl file.

This probably means that there is a rule to detect plain text files because that one likely has a higher precedence as the file suffix. Not entirely sure about it, but that's where I would start to look for the problem. And by all means, please file a bug report for the issue! Bye, Axel.

Haiku at SCALE : Looking for a panelist to represent Haiku at SCALE.
Hi, My name is Bala, and I am one of the organizers of the Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE). We have had Haiku at SCALE for several years now, and hope to have it the same way this year too. I'm trying to put together a panel on OS'es at SCALE, and we currently have Illumos, Linux and BSD, and I am hoping to have someone represent Haiku on the panel. The panel will be on the 21st of January, at the Hilton LAX. Anyone (preferably some of the core developers/testers) interested in being on the panel? Thanks, Bala.

SCALE's entirely volunteer driven, and as such, we don't have a lot of money. I can provide accommodation for 2 nights at the hotel though. Where are you coming from? Bala. I just asked for others, I don't have quite the experience you're asking for. (Netherlands and I know a lot of people are from Germany, you could probably bribe them with a trip)

SOPA Website blackout ?
In case you have been living on another planet last week, you might have missed news that some big sites like Wikipedia will be blacked out on wednesday to protest an upcoming bill nicknamed SOPA (meaning, ironically, Stop Online Piracy Act), which is one but many of current attempts at restricting online freedom. Those are just the latest iteration of longstanding threats which also hurt free software like us. Starting with DMCA and its legal provisions for DRM making it very hard to legally ship with a way to decode a DVD for ex. in the US. I propose we follow the blackout on our website. more info: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackout http://www.BlackoutSOPA.org/ https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/01/how-pipa-and-sopa-violate-white-house-principles-supporting-free-speech François.
