groff problem?

Hi,

Does anyone know a workaround for self-building 2.1 on VAX? I'm stuck at
groff:

GROFF_COMMAND_PREFIX='';  export GROFF_COMMAND_PREFIX;
GROFF_BIN_PATH=`echo /usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/roff/groff
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/roff/troff
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/pic
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/eqn
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/tbl
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/grn
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/refer
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/soelim
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/preproc/html
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/devices/grops
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/devices/grohtml | sed -e 's|  *|:|g'`;
export GROFF_BIN_PATH; sed -e "s; <at> VERSION <at> ;1.19;"
/usr/src/gnu/dist/groff/doc/pic.ms |
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/roff/groff/groff
-M/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/tmac -M/usr/src/gnu/dist/groff/tmac
-F/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/font -F/usr/src/gnu/dist/groff/font -Upet -ww
-Tps -ms -mwww >pic.ps
/usr/obj/tools/groff/build/src/roff/groff/groff: pic: Segmentation fault
(core dumped)

Thanks,

Free to Good Home VS3100/M76 SPX - Melbourne/Australia

Hi All,

Anyone interested in a VaxStation 3100 M76 SPX, 16MB RAM, 19" Coulor
Screen, keyboard and mouse? Comes with CD-ROM (DEC origional, bootable),
probably a couple of 1GB SCSI drives. Located in Melbourne/Australia.

Regards,
Tim

SPXg support, last call

Hello,

As it happens I'm still out of job so I figured I'd finally finish the
work on SPXg driver that I intended to make almost a year ago after a
fellow Vaxenthusiast provided me with hardware and I feel kinda bad for
not doing it yet even though there were no promises given :-) Back then
I asked for framebuffer identification information and recieved
absolutely no response (not a single one). I can hardcode the values to
make the driver work on my machine and disregard other combinations of
hardware out there and will do just that if I receive no response again
but that's the last ting I want to do. So - pretty puhhlease - if you
happen to own a 4000/60 with SPXg/gt or 4000/9x with either LCPSX, SPXg
or SPXgt, send me the output of the following commands:

1: for Vaxstation 4000/9x:

>>> e 25800000

(or for VS 4000/60)

>>> e 20020000

for ALL COMBINATIONS of S3 switch (the one that chooses between serial
and glass console) and switch onboard your LCSPX / SPXg / SPXgt (the one
that switches between 66 Hz and 72 Hz refresh rate). Note that there are
actually two switches on the framebuffer card, only one of them actually
does something; the other one appears to be unconnected. You can easily
access these switches by removing top cover of your Vaxstation. This
means 4 combinations (serial/66 Hz; serial 72 Hz; glass 66 Hz and glass
72 Hz) of output - can you do that ?

Re: SPXg support, last call

Blaz,

Nice to get some traffic on the list :)

I have a VS4000/90 I can try this on.

Mark.

Hello,

Please do. I have a feeling this is pretty much the last thing I'm going
to do re: Vaxen because I don't seem to have enough time for everything
anymore (and that's without a job :-/) so I want to do it right.

FWIW, looks like my enthusiasm has gotten the better of me; I've managed
to compile a kernel that won't boot anymore and for some reason
MOPbooting isn't working either (mopd sends the first stage loader
successfully and machine just restarts ?!). The 1.5.3 binary tree
doesn't seem to be around anymore so I can't even get ahold of a known
good first stage loader (the ones I tried are from 1.6.1 which I vaguely
seem to recall having installed once and 2.1; neither seems to work or
I'm doing something stupid). As my luck shall have it this is the only
functional machine with SCSI controller around so I can't even unplug
the disk and copy GENERIC kernel to it.

Since I haven't done this in a while I might be missing something. I've
done the following:

- set up mopd which appears to be working (according to its logs it
answers query and sends the 1st stage loader)
- set up NFS share of directory where kernel image is located
- set up dhcpd (hopefully correctly); when ran with -f switch it doesn't
mention receiving any requests or anything even though it's listening on
the right interface ?!

I'm not sure how the NetBSD first-stage bootloader works, but didn't
it do dhcp/bootp and tftp afterwards?

A tcpdump would help, IFF your box didn't reboot upon receiving the
first-stage bootloader...

Re: SPXg support, last call

Hello,

> Am I missing somehing there ?

To answer my own question and to hopefully prevent others from
reinventing the wheel:

first stage bootloader of all the versions from ftp.netbsd.org I tried
is DEFECTIVE and doesn't work. At all. Even though I haven't tried all
~7 of them systematically I am pretty certain there is not a single
functional bootloader anywhere on ftp.netbsd.org so it is impossible to
install NetBSD/Vax using any of those trees (1.6.1 and up).

I found a functional bootloader (from 1.5.3 which was last functional
version) on one of German mirrors that still carries 1.5.3. Grab it
while you can (before they get around to culling the old directory trees
as well).

It would be really great if somebody could figure out why all those
bootloaders are defective and replace defective ones with a functional
copy; I'd make installations so much easier.

Hello Blaz,

You should be able to find older releases under
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-archive/

IIRC the bootloader from 1.5.3 doesn't load elf kernels. I think
I was able to install my newly compiled kernel and userland with
the 1.5.3 installer though.

Do the official ISOS boot on a VAX?

The VAX-specific ISO images I download from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/iso/ do not appear to be bootable, even
though the readme states:

>The following architectures will boot directly from CD-ROM:

Vax is included in this list. I also tried the i-386 ISO just to check and
it also has no kernel image in its root directory. I tried both the 2.1, the
2.02 and the 1.62ISOS. Vaxes in my house which boot the VMS CD fine won't
boot any ISO I build from the official NetBsd site. I've tried several
Vaxstations, 3100s and 4000s. All have working SCSI CD-ROM drives.

I do know that I have to be able to write 512K sectors (blocks), and am not
absolutely sure my CD writers are doing that. But I'd think that the root
directory of a bootable CD for any platform would contain some kernel image
or bootstrap binary; these root directories contain only documentation.

I am new to NetBSD and new to VAX, but my husband is a Dec collector so I
have lots of hardware at my disposal. It seems like all these old computers
that he restores should be doing something useful. I have Linux experience,
but my Linux system is currently kaput.

So, Unfortunately, I don't have a working UNIX system; I can't follow the
directions for making my own bootable CD from the boot images. I have VMS
and Windows, but all instructions I find seem to be for people who have an
available UNIX system to build their own boot CDS with.

Lots of vendors sell NetBSDCDS cheaply, but if they're just copying the
official distribution, I can't believe any of these CDS would boot either.
