Re: 2100: selftest failure?

hmm, maybe try swapping some memory out? see if any of it is really bad?

startx error after upgrading from 1.6.2 to 2.0

Today I just upgraded 5000/260 from 1.6.2 to 2.0, kernel-WSCONS is
booted. While startx failed with messege:

_XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for local

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections XdecNetBSD: screen
0: PXG, 1280x1024

Fatal server error:
decPXInit: unable to open /dev/stic0: Operation not permitted

giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 61): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Google just gave little information. Any hints?

TIA

sonnie

Access to /dev/stic0 is not allowed when securelevel is greater than 0.
The default kernel will be running with securelevel at 1, and XdecNetBSD
won't be able to access /dev/stic0.

The option INSECURE in the WSCONS config file needs to be uncommented
and the kernel rebuilt to allow access to the PX series of graphics cards.
I think you may also be able to patch the secureity level to be -1, but
I haven't tried that.

DVD Boot

Hi people.

I have an extra SCSI DVD-ROM drive lying around and I was wondering if older machines (including PMAX) would
have any trouble booting off of it. The reason why I ask is that it would allow me to make a NetBSD Install DVD
containing code for all the platforms at once, plus source, right?

Peace... Sridhar

Most old machines need 512 byte sector drives to boot. If your DVD-ROM
drive can be jumpered to 512 byte sector mode you should read:

Re: DVD Boot

it should appear just as a (removable) disk to a pmax... as long as the
drive will support 512 byte sectors, it should be ok.

Starting xdm (NetBSD/pmax 2.0 on DECstation 5000/25)

Hello,

I am encountering the following problem with NetBSD/pmax 2.0 on a
Personal DECstation 5000/25:

xdm dont's start.

/var/log/xdm.log contains :

Fatal server error:
no screens found
xdm error (pid 283): Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly: 1
xdm error (pid 283): Display :0 is beeing disabled

The workstation has frame buffer on-board and a working monitor, used
as a console at the present.

What could be wrong in my system ? Something in the X config files ?

Thanks,

Jean-Pierre

I would presume you are using the GENERIC kernel, which does not support
wscons. The X server distributed in 2.0 is XdecNetBSD, which only works
with wscons. There should be a kernel distributed on the 2.0 sets which
is netbsd-WSCONS, which should work with XdecNetBSD.

I think there may be problems with netbsd-WSCONS on the 5000/25 (which
I've fixed in -current).

You may need to get the Xpmax X server from a 1.6 distribution, but I
think that may also fail to work with the GENERIC kernel.
