Re: NetBSD 2.0_BETA on pmax using 2048 byte sectors instead of 512 for CD-ROM access?

The problem was caused by a bug in the emulator, not a bug in NetBSD.

Free DECstations!

Ok, I have a bunch of old DECstation hardware that I got to set up as
a computer lab at a college. Unfortunately, that never happened and
now, with MacOS X, the college no longer needs the hardware. It is now
stuck in my basement. Before I take it to Office Depot's computer
recycling program, I figured I'd see if anyone wanted it.
Unfortunately, it's all too heavy to ship so.... This is for pick up
(or delivery within a reasonable distance) of Minneapolis, MN or Ripon,
WI or anywhere in between. Email me if you're interested!
Here's what I've got. Most of the CPU's have hard drives, I believe
they all have RAM. The last time this stuff was tested, it all worked,
but I make no guarantees.

Computers:
  6 personal DecStation 5000/20 CPUs

Monitors:
1 VR-319-DA DEC monitor (~19", black and white)
  4 VRM17-AA DECStation monitors (~16", grayscale?)
  5 DEC monitor stands

Peripherals (there may be a few more keyboards/mice):
3 personal DECStation keyboards, with cables
1 Digital PC keyboard (clean and nice!)
  2 personal DECStation mice, square
3 personal DECStation mice, hockey puck

Various DECstation cables and adapters:

Other:
2 Digital DELNI 8-port AUI hubs

Leaner kernel, more memory for user apps?

Anyone have any suggestions for trimming down the NetBSD kernel footprint?

My poor 24MB box is swapping like mad, I don't recall it ever being this
bad in 1.2d/1.3 ... Running X11 starts to touch swap, mMosaic pretty much
forces paging out right there. Is this about what I have to expect from
newer revisions of OS'es?

NetBSD 1.6.2 (DS3100) #1: Fri Aug 6 08:52:45 MDT 2004
     blc <at> diablo.dunnelan.com:/usr/src/sys/arch/pmax/compile/DS3100
DECstation 3100 (PMAX)
total memory = 24576 KB
avail memory = 20292 KB
using 332 buffers containing 1328 KB of memory
[...]

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2382476 Aug 6 1972 /netbsd

Kernel sizes seems to be almost 2x what it used to be (then again, many
other OS'es did the same...)

Attached is my config file for the kernel I tried to lean down. Is there
any other big hammers I could do to reduce swapping?

Thanks!

BTW, anyone want my NetBSD/mipsel/pmax centericq 4.10.0 binary let me
know, took 3 days to compile on my DECstation... hope that a package in
pkgsrc will come out soon for those who have mipsel boxes with less than
~64MB RAM ...
Attachment (DS3100.gz): application/octet-stream, 3241 bytes

you might want to look at tuning the vm.{anon,exec,file}{min,max}
values... increase anon & exec and reduce file... note that "max"
is not a complete upper limit, but anything above it's "max" can
expect it's pages reclaimed any time...

netbsd could benefit from some better self-tuning here, but it's
not clear or simple exactly how to do it best..

Yeah, try the following settings, for example:
	sysctl -w vm.filemin=2
	sysctl -w vm.filemax=4

Free (somewhat-ancient) hardware for SF Bay Area folks

Hi folks,

I've got a bunch of random somewhat-ancient hardware that I'm either
going to give away, or have recycled. ("Mmm, Office Depot.")

All of this stuff is at least 7 years old, and much of it hasn't been
powered on for 3+ years. (Some bits, e.g. the HDDs, were powered on
last week.)

I'm willing to give any/all of this to people at mutually-agreed upon
locations(s) in the SF Bay Area, but i'm **not** willing to ship. (If
you're elsewhere and want some... find a friend in the Bay Area who's
willing to hold on to it for you and/or ship it!)

I don't care who wants it -- I'm more inclined to give it to NetBSD
users/developers than others, but really, I'd rather give it to
[v*anybody* than recycle it. But, recycling is a better option than
keeping it all.

The summary list is below. It isn't completely descriptive, but if
there's interest, I can write down part numbers and stuff. (If
there's no interest, I don't want to waste the time.)

If I don't hear from anybody by 8/22, I'll start taking stuff to be
recycled (terminals first, probably) soon thereafter.

Free hardware in Pittsburgh...

I have some hardware in Pittsburgh that I would like to get rid of ASAP.
I had hoped to be able to put this stuff to good use but have run out of
time and space. I will keep them at least another week, but if they are
not spoken for by then I will likely take them over to High Tech Scrap.
I can keep stuff longer for actual pickup if necessary. A few of the
smaller items could be shipped, but most would need to be picked up.

The thing I would most like to see find a good home is not actually a
pmax but a Tektronix 4107A vector graphics terminal. It has a keyboard,
however many keys are not working. The terminal has a small back plastic
panel missing exposing what looks like ROMs but otherwise seems to be in
good condition.

I have two chips that look like ROMs labeled 23-075E8-00 and
23-076E8-00. I don't know if this is for the terminal or the DECstations
or something else.

I have two DECstation 3100 (one listed as 3100S) plus a case motherboard
and power supply that has otherwise been used as parts for the other two
(power supply seems to work, don't know about the motherboard). The two
"working" 3100s I have not actually been able to verify work, as I do not
have a monitor and have unable to get a response with a H8571-A connected
by means of a phone cable cut to fit (I verified all six contacts go
through). With one of the systems I tried several combinations of cables
connected to the H8571-A and verified that everyting before this connector
worked with my maxine (though I don't know if I got the flow control
completely right). I had removed the display memory card in the 3100 and
installed a mouse terminator. I also tried the other system, however that
time I didn't verify that everything before the final connector otherwise

free 3MAX

I have a DecStation 5000/200 that is now just taking up space.
It is located in the Birmingham, AL (USA) area, and priority goes to
anyone willing to pick it up, but I'll ship it anywhere as long as you pay
for it.

DecStation 5000/200
no framebuffer
no RAM
standard DEC external hard drive cage with 2 RZ57 1Gb drives
scsi cable
keyboard
3 keyboard/mouse cables

I'd rather see it go to someone who might use it rather than just into the
trash.

Re: Free hardware in Pittsburgh...

hmm, i have plenty of pmax gear myself already, but if you're in
Pittsburgh, you should definitely come to the sixth annual VAX party,
which will be held sometime in the fall, october/november sometime..
are you at either of the universities by any chance?
