Hi,
Please take a look at one of existing MIPS ports.  You'll be surprised at
how easy it is to get a working system ported, at least partially.  I was
able to do a working port to a custom designed board in less than two day's
using the evbmips port as a baseline.

That's the main reason why I've chosen NetBSD as my OS of choice for my
custom designs.

it pretty much solves all your problems.
you may have to have write drivers for proprietary devices and all.
