For a long time Kaffe did work, but dependinfing on the phase of the Moon, only the interpreter did work and not the JIT. What the status is today, I do not know, for various reasons. For quite some time this was an interest of mine as well. I haven't looked into it recently, however. Perhaps with the opening of Java by Sun the situation will change for the better.
