Using pkgsrc with low RAM

Hi,

I'm trying to build lighttpd from pkgsrc on my Mac LC 475 which has 32MB RAM and 50MB swap. I get as far as
building pcre, where the build stops. From this log message:

UVM: pid 29033 (cc1), uid 0 killed: out of swap

I gather that I'm running out of available memory. I read somewhere that putting CFLAGS+=-O0 in
/etc/mk.conf would help, but it didn't have any effect (and I don't understand what it would do).

I realise that this probably isn't a mac68k specific problem, but I reasoned that many people on this list
will have systems with small amounts of RAM and might be willing to offer advice.

Regards,
James.

Duo 270c

HI All-

I've finally come back around to working on getting a Duo 270c running NetBSD that I started about 7 years
ago. This time I actually made some progress. There are two failures with 6.0 that I need to address:
getting X working and getting a Newer Ethernet MicroDock working.

Getting X working was a pretty simple fix, although I'm unfamiliar with all the ins and outs of the console
driver model. It seems a little convoluted, but that's probably because I don't fully understand it and
has been worked on over the years by many different developers. The failure was with the Xmac68k server
trying to fill in the initial stipple pattern in the 270c's 640x480 monochrome framebuffer. It was page
faulting about 80% down the screen - obviously the framebuffer wasn't getting fully mapped into the X
server address space. So, for whatever reason, the code to find the framebuffer size for the 270c isn't
calculating mac68k_video.mv_len properly. In the macfb_cnattach() routine inside
mac68k/dev/macfb.c I found the line:

        dc->dc_size = (mac68k_video.mv_len > 0) ? mac68k_video.mv_len : dc->dc_ht * dc->dc_rowbytes;

which I changed to:

       dc->dc_size   =  dc->dc_ht * dc->dc_rowbytes;

to get the X server mapping the full framebuffer. Are there any mac framebuffer/console wizards who can
direct me to the proper place to fix the mv_len calculation?

Next on the agenda is the ethernet MicroDock. Currently I get:

netdock0 at nubus0 slot e: API Engineering EtherRun-Dock Ethernet card for Macintosh Duo
: Ethernet address 00:20:a5:10:2f:21
sysctl_createc: sysctl_create() returned 22
: could not attach sysctl nodes

Netbooting mac68k

Hi gents.

I'm still working on my pet pkgsrc-build-cluster idea.

I understand mac68k can not netboot in the traditional way, simply
because the firmware isn't clever enough. So, i have to boot a System
7, tell it to boot my kernel which then configures the network
interface and mounts the root filesystem via NFS. Right?

How do i tell the kernel which NIC to use? How do i tell the kernel
which IP it has (dhcpd?) and where it's NFS server is (dhcpd too?)?

And how do i fit all that on a floppy? I have the kernel crosscompiled
and down to about 1 mb compressed. I'll probably be able to shave off
a few more kb, but not significantly more.

The NetBSD booter needs about 100 kb, the ,,System'' file from my
System 7 install floppy needs 550 kb. I Don't think i can make it that
way.

However, i noticed, while making an empty floppy image with ,,Disk
Copy'', there is an option for a 1.7 MB floppy. I do have some factory
fresh 2MB floppys (for IBM PS2 systems i suppose). Do you guys know if
there is a chance to reformat one of those to 1.7 mb and read them in
a Quadra 605/650 floppy drive?

MFG,

Karsten Kruse

Where do the mac68k packages on ftp.netbsd.org come from?

Hi,

i wonder, is there a farm of beefy 68k machines somewhere that are
started a few weeks before a possible release to compile the packages?
Or are they crosscompiled like the system?

I'm discussing the possible benefits and implementation of a stack of
cheap, yet powerful 68k boxes to compile packages faster.

Imagine a stack of LC475/Q605 with 68040 at 40 MHz and 132 MB Ram,
netbooting NetBSD from a fast server and running distcc to compile
packages. :)

MFG,

Karsten Kruse
