Retiring apmdev(4)

We have apm(4), that uses pmf(9), and apmdev(4), that uses
dopowerhooks(9). They are mostly identical otherwise. My
understanding is that powerhooks API is being deprecated. The only
two remaining users are apmdev(4) used by zaurus all hpc* ports and
arch/arm/xscale/pxa2x0_apm.c that doesn't seem to be mentioned in any
config files.*

I want to have zaurus and hpc* ports switched to apm(4) so that we can
retire apmdev(4) and powerhooks API.

I brought over changes from apm to apmdev so that now they only differ
in pmf vs powerhooks bits and in trivial s/apm/apmdev/ naming diffs.
Now that they are demonstrably congruent we can do the switch knowing
that effectively we only change power management hooks.

After my recent commits you can just replace "apmdev0 at hpcapm0" with
"apm0 at hpcapm0" in your kernel config to give it a try. My Jornada
complains about

  Devices without power management support: mainbus0 cpu0 btnmgr0 shb0
  rtc0 scif0 adc0 j6x0pwr0 j6x0tp0 j6x0lcd0 hd64461if0 hd64461video0
  hpcfb0 hd64461pcmcia0 pfckbd0 hpckbd0 hpcapm0 ne0 wdc0

but seems to suspend and resume fine otherwise.

We need to properly convert all drivers to pmf. For most of them a
no-op hook is probably sufficient for now as hpcapm(4) uses its own
config_hook(9) hooks to manage power.

So if you can help with this task it would be greatly appreciated. I

Running NetBSD on HTC Harrier PPC6600

A small question.

Will hpcarm port of NetBSD work on PPC6600(HTC Harrier) ?
It has Intel(R) PXA263 (ARM)

I have unzipped hpcarmcd-4.0.1.iso in my 2GB SD Card.
The HPCBOOT.EXE installer tells "Data in memory will be lost"
Will it overwrite my WM2003 OS ?
Can I run netbsd from my SD Card without losing WM2003 ?

I guess most interesting peripherals are not supported.

Booting NetBSD has the same effect as doing hard reset. Your Windows
Mobile (in the flash) will not be lost, but all data and installed
programs will be lost. Make a full backup before trying to boot
NetBSD. Afterwards you will get back your WM at factory settings and
you can restore your data and programs from the backup.

Re: Re: Running NetBSD on HTC Harrier PPC6600

Dear Ushakov,

Thanks for the reply. I will try this.

Just a quick question. If this will hardreset my fone, then will it do
this everytime I try to run HPCBOOT.EXE from WM2003 ? WIll my fone get
hardreset everytime I run HPCBOOT.EXE. I assume nothing is being
installed on drive other than my SD CARD..Right ?

Re: Running NetBSD on HTC Harrier PPC6600

Hi Azim,

Yes it will hard reset the phone every time you run HPCBOOT.EXE. I've
never tried NetBSD on an HTC handset but on my HP Jornada the screen
always goes very bright after using NetBSD and you have to remove the
battery and backup battery to get it to go back to normal. Will be
interesting to find out how it runs on the Harrier.

Regards,
Nick.

I think I know how to fix this, but I don't have the hardware to try
it and, unfortunately, nor do I have time currently to draft a patch
for someone to try. So if someone with arm asm knowledge is
interested, I can send my notes.

Re: Re: Running NetBSD on HTC Harrier PPC6600

Dear Nick, Ushakov and all,

I don't know which device to choose from the list of ipaq and Jordana.
Will it make a difference in the booting process or
are the effects of the choice limited to the screen size and layout.

When I select Boot. It does a biot of processing, fills the bar and
gives the folowing mesage :

No symbol and/or string table in binary.
(not fatal)

Check the screenshot :

Re: Re: Running NetBSD on HTC Harrier PPC6600

After Touching Boot, it also said "Last Chance"
Push Yes to Boot.

And Harrer hangs after that.
If I remove and reinsert my battery after that. It hard resets and
starts the Windows Installation.
