Re: my find... (and a plea for advice)

Lucky Man!
To find out one 745 is'nt so frequent.
But I'm quite surprised you have to consult the pdf manual to deduce it was a 745.
Usually, the model number is clearly visible on the front panel, this is recalled beside the serial number
on the rear panel of the box. But anyway ...
To obtain a display on a screen with an HP 9000/7xx workstation, there are few specific conditions (the
following list is'nt limitative)

	1. First: It is strongly recommanded to have an HPIL Keyboard for the suite (*)
(For the configuration, I do not know if a PS2 Keyboard -with RS232 adapter- works).
I can't help you for that.
	2. Is your monitor Sync. on Green or Separate Sync. compatible ?
(recommanded resolution: 1280x1024) for example: the HP2094A.
(IMPORTANT WARNING: Because for the most part of the PC's monitors does'nt fit
and can cause damages (Be CAREFULL: the VGA connector is misleading), only the
monitors mentionned above, have to be pluged into the built-in graphics connector.
(for a database of these monitors, see for instance:
 	http://www.si87.com/MonitorSolutions/hp/ ).
	3. Is your Graphics Card configured with the resolution and size of the monitor ?
(According to the type of monitor: 17" or 19", Color or Grayscale, you have to
set the switches in the specific positions (see owner's manual, for details)
	4. Are the BOOT-ROM's Graphics parameters correctly specified ?
	For that:
Press "Tab" Key (*) at Power On, after the keyboard's LED flashs during the boot
process to initiate the automatic monitor selection process. Then, the system will
query you for the monitor type. You have to press "Return" Key to confirm your
	selection.

With a graphics console, everything becomes easier ...
Bye.

power supply standard question

Hi!

I've got HP9000 710 workstation without power supply.
It's quite old machine, but I'd like set it up anyway.
The problem is I've no idea how to connect any power supply to
the motherboard - I have not oryginal power supply.

Anybody knows this standard - where's 12 V, where's 5V, GND etc.

There are(on the motherboard) 2 connectors:

first is 14 pins, second is 5 pins, and i suppose the begger is
supply(maybe this small too??).

The other question is for keyboard - what about keyboard?

Thanks a lot.

Re: power supply standard question

You're right to be anxious your 710 to revive.
The 7xx are nice workstations...

1/ For the power supply, you have first to consult the HP-HCL in pdf format (9MB!):
See http://ftp.parisc-linux.org/docs/980723.pdf, to extend your research.
It is preferable to acquire a standard model. If you can't, I think too a power
supply type AT or ATX is possible (with any adaptations of connectors - Be careful
to the Graphics Card as well). I could help you about it, if my box were
open actually. May be, some other time.

2/ About the keyboard: It is a HIL-keyboard (much easier to find out on the World
Market). Don't forget the HIL-mouse connected on it.
The keyboard isn't essential to boot, if you have LAN or a serial connection.
Except, the configuration will be more acrobatic.
For instance: a PS/2 keyboard, via a RS232-adapter, could be added, but have to be
pre-configured.

netbooting hppa boxes

I've got a HP D/390 here, and I wanted to try something really silly
and netboot NetBSD (well, *try* and netboot NetBSD :)

Problem is, I've no idea what protocol it speaks when you do:

boot 10/16/6.0

I ran up an rbootd but that didn't seem to respond.

Comments ?

Newer machines use DHCP and TFTP to netboot, this may be one.
