Qube doesn't respond after a few minutes (current)

Hi everyone.

At the moment I spend most of my times studying for my finals, thats why
I haven't worked much on the build server.
I have updated the qube (with the binary package to current):
# uname -a
NetBSD 4.99.11 NetBSD 4.99.11 (GENERIC) #0: Tue Feb 20 01:22:15 UTC
2007

builds <at> b1.netbsd.org:/home/builds/ab/HEAD/cobalt/200702190000Z-obj/home/builds/ab/HEAD/src/sys/arch/cobalt/compile/GENERIC
cobalt

And I thought I had set up everything to run the bulk build. Today I
just wanted to try out if the exclusion of kde and gnome worked with a
package.

Unfortunately, the qube froze after around 10 to 15 minutes while
compiling. I couldn't ping the qube, nor I got something from the serial
console :( This error is "reproducable" ...

/var/crash is empty. So I have no information what happens.

Does anybody know where I can start looking. Or if this current version
is buggy?

I really would love to get bulk build running ...

Bye,
Dennis

I grabbed the Feb 8 kernel binary that Andy built as a test while he still had it around
qube# uname -a
NetBSD qube 4.99.9 NetBSD 4.99.9 (INSTALL) #0: Thu Feb 8 08:02:51 MST 2007
root <at> taz:/usr/obj-current/sys/arch/cobalt/compile/INSTALL cobalt

and booted to it; for some reason it wants to netboot at each restart, but I can go in from console and redirect
things where they should be. It looks like the INSTALL config was last touched Nov 8 2006.

Anyway it seems to be running fine, I'm 1.5 days into building distribution with build.sh, after doing the

This almost sounds like it's picking up the wrong libs.

If you take the new binaries and put them all in their own tree and
chroot into that, do you see the same issue?

4.99.10 -current: success

So, I just build the whole distro on my Qube, as mentioned before I did update to a Feb 07 kernel binary before
trying this successfully. When I built the latest kernel, I included the kernel options I posted earlier,
to see if I could get USB going.

qube# uname -a
NetBSD qube 4.99.10 NetBSD 4.99.10 (QUBE2-USB-021607CURR) #0: Mon Feb 26 13:35:05 EST 2007
root <at> qube:/obj/sys/arch/cobalt/compile/QUBE2-USB-021607CURR cobalt

The only glitch I have so far, is that when building from the INSTALL kernel that has been minimized for the
Qube, the kernel that results wants to netboot. I have compared the kernel conf files for GENERIC and
INSTALL, and then compared them to the GENERIC for 1.6.1 source tree, and I don't see where it is coming from
(granted, I only seem to work on this after midnight or before work in the AM). I haven't tried GENERIC yet,
but INSTALL seems to be just minimized for the Qube and not a special netboot-only kernel (?). I had the same
issue with Andy's Feb 8 kernel binary.

I'm not sure why root comes up at tlp0, should I just change that
root at ?

line in the conf file to wd0a? How to specify the dump device wd0b then?

Help with this would be great, as at present any reboot needs a console intervention to proceed properly.
I'm sure it is something easy I'm overlooking.

From the dmesg, it looks like the USB card is awake, perhaps one USB port has an issue? The dmesg is a little
long, I hit a couple keys to get hyperterm going so it tried to netboot a couple times.

I haven't done anything with external devices and NetBSD; I guess I'll read about mounting a flash drive
(hmm... did I enable FAT32 in the kernel, I'll have to look and make sure). It would be fun to get the Qube and
the UPS talking, too.

It would be worth to post more details
(commands you tried, build logs where it hanged).
Does it hang at the same point on build, or at random place?

I didn't have problem during building NetBSD own binaries,
by build.sh script, but it might have problems around new
pthread support, which might be tested during configure scripts.

How to delete log files

Some of my log files have grown to excessive size:

-rw------- 1 root wheel 36183077 Mar 2 22:44 /var/log/maillog
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 23935707 Mar 2 08:39 /var/log/messages

Even when I am logged in as root, I cannot move or delete these files.
I have tried newsyslog and it returns no errors, but the files are
unchanged.

What is the trick to moving or deleting files in /var/log?

Can anyone help please?

newsyslog(8) does the trick.

Make sure you have:
- /etc/newsyslog.conf (in etc.tgz)
- "0 * * * * /usr/bin/newsyslog" entry in crontab(5) file for root
  (or use /var/cron/tabs/root in etc.tgz)

Re: How to delete log files

Unfortunately, newsyslog does not do the trick. Do you have any other
ideas?

    raq2: {10} cd /var/log
    raq2: {11} ls -l maillog
    -rw------- 1 root wheel 36217006 Mar 3 04:36 maillog
    raq2: {12} newsyslog maillog
    raq2: {13} ls -l maillog
    -rw------- 1 root wheel 36217006 Mar 3 04:36 maillog

    raq2: {40} uname -a
    NetBSD raq2 3.99.7 NetBSD 3.99.7 (GENERIC) #0: Sun Jul 3 11:00:03
CEST 2005 ro

ot <at> netbsd20.diskless.s-zone.org:/Data/NetBSD/cobalt/obj/sys/arch/cobalt/compile/
    GENERIC cobalt

Thanks and regards,
Dave

What is the contents of your /etc/newsyslog.conf ?

Also, what does "newsyslog -n" show when you run it?

Cheers,
Simon.

Everything looks good with -n, but when I actually run the command,
it aborts with an "Operation not permitted" error. This is the same error
I get when I try to manually delete any file in /var/log. See trace below:

raq2: {55} newsyslog -n /var/log/maillog

/var/log/maillog <7Z>: --> trim log (log age > interval)
  rm -f /var/log/maillog.6
  rm -f /var/log/maillog.6.gz
  mv /var/log/maillog.5.gz /var/log/maillog.6.gz
  chmod 600 /var/log/maillog.6.gz
  chown 0:0 /var/log/maillog.6.gz
  mv /var/log/maillog.4.gz /var/log/maillog.5.gz
  chmod 600 /var/log/maillog.5.gz
