restore cd on qube

Well I have finally got round to burning the CD and I used my laptop to boot from the CD. Then I netbooted the
Qube 2, which worked and the LCD screen said different things while it went through the install process
until it rebooted. Then it said "starting up". After this I telnetted to the Qube 2 (at ip 10.0.0.160).

Is that it? I mean is it fully installed or not - because I couldn't find a lot of stuff on it. Do I need to
repartition the disk or not? How do I recompile the kernel - I can't find the sources on my system. Also when I
turn the Qube off (shutdown -h now), then turn it on, I can't get back into it???
I had to reinstall again.

Any help is gladly received.

Phil

Yes, that's pretty much it. Note however that it is the *base* system which
is installed, you will not find e.g. X on your system. There is a tarball on
the CD that basically contains /usr/X11R6, but you have to install it
manually.

> lot of stuff on it. Do I need to repartition the disk or not? How do I

You shouldn't need to repartition the disk unless you are not happy with the
estimates taken by the installation script. But in that case there was
probably no need to use automated installation at all :)

> recompile the kernel - I can't find the sources on my system. Also when I

Sources are not included on the CD, please see
http://www.netbsd.org/Releases/ to find out the best way to get the kernel.

Just don't turn off your laptop which is booted from the CD or (even better)
use serial console to make network settings. Once Qube is installed, it is
configured to get its ip configuration from DHCP server which is running off
the installation CD -- otherwise there is no way to setup the network if e.g.
serial console is not present. In other words, there are a few things to do
manually in order to complete the installation:

 - Login into your box
 - Turn off DHCP client (comment out appropriate line in /etc/rc.conf) or
   reconfigure it as needed
 - Setup your primary network interface (simply create /etc/ifconfig.tlp0
   with the appropriate information)
 - If needed, setup your secondary interface

Also, telnetd is on by default. I would recommend to disable it and use sshd
instead.

Hope this helps,

XNTPD on RaQ2

Hello, I installed NetBSD from the Restore CD, but can not get XNTP to
install.

Brief history

I have a downloaded the '//pub/netbsd/NetBSD-current/src/usr.sbin/xntp'
directory to '/usr/src/' (is that where it should go? sbin just looked like
something I shouldn't mess with) Tried to 'make clean' from within the xntp
directory. It gave me errors but I didn't know if they were critical or
normal. I hoped beyond hope that that make would just work, but it didn't.
It appears to me that there is a directory missing?
'/usr/src/dist/ntp/include'

Any advice, documentation, or How-To's would be seriously appreciated.
Especially since BIND is next on the agenda, if I can't even get XNTP going
I'll really be in a .. nevermind.

BTW, does anyone else have trouble with the default NetBSD FTP server? I
have never seen it up.

Build it from the port tree. I believe it's net/ntp4.

Oh, and, don't use BIND. Try djbdns instead. :)

mysql

Hey guys... new on the list.
Thanx to you who i mailed offlist and asked for help.

Any news on mit-pthreads for cobalt?
The only thing i found in the archives is what i've already figured out ;)
We need mit pthreads for mysql to compile.
I've tried compiling manually... ahem... to the best of my abilities...
And no luck.

The question is... are there any hardware problems, or just lack of
interest for porting mit threading to cobalt/mips-port netbsd?

Thanks anyway for all the work!
What would we do without netbsd? =)

RE: LCD driver?

How do I compile it? I have been trying for almost a month now, I didn't
want to ask, but I can not figure it out.
I know I have to re-build my kernel, but I really don't know how and all the
documentation I have read points to files that do not exist once the machine
has been built from the recovery CD.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I got it to compile, and boot. It gets rid of the annoying "Starting up"
message, but doesn't seem to do anything else.

Re: LCD driver?

Kernel sources are not included on the recovery CD, you have to download them
manually. Once you got the sources on your Cobalt box the kernel can be built
as usual (see e.g.
http://www.mclink.it/personal/MG2508/nbsdeng/chap-kernel.html). Also please
note that the LCD patch mentioned in the email cited below is only applicable
to 1.6 kernel. -current has LCD support by default.

Hope this helps,

2700WG serial ports.

Hi people,
Should hopefully be able to get my 2700WG up on the weekend now  that my boards are back for the serial port addon.

I piggybacked a pcb for the serial port onto another board order I was doing for work, and the quantities are somewhat stuffed up - I now have an additional 14 bare PCBs that are superfluos to my needs !!

These are double sided, through hole plated, 2 sided soldermasked silk screened boards that take a SMT 8530 and ds14c238 and all the rest are through hole.

I'll get mine up and working ove the weekend, just wondered if there were any 2700wg owners who might be interested in purchasing either a fully made up and tested or the bare board ?

Regards
Ray
