Install failure 1.6.1_RC2

Hello!

Yesterday I tried to install the 1.6.1_RC2 on my RiscPC
but during the install of a completely new system the
install system something got seriously wrong....:

After installing the sets from 200303140000
and then after unpacking those the system died when trying
to access the hard disc again.
A restart and trying to mount the partitions by hand
showed the the discs inodes etc. were totally screwed up!!!

Can anyone verify this?

I did this on a hard disc on which I installed versions of
NetBSD a dozen times without any problems, so I don't think
that the hardware is damaged.

Frank

I didn't have any problems with an earlier build of RC2.. what hardware
are you running on?

I'm using the plain old internal IDE interface.

Is the problem repeatable? What happens if you restart the installation
from scratch?

Yes, I am also using quite a plain system:
RPC700 board, internal IDE, SA110, 64MB

Just to rule this out, whivh revision of the SA110?

It would seem that one of the more recent changes to -current has
eliminated this problem, then. As for what I'm not too sure as I haven't
been keeping up with -current recently, though.

Are you in a position to try earlier versions of -current to give a rough
idea of when it started working?

And it's definitely worth sending a PR.

I never had problems like this with -stable either.
This morning I tried it agagin with different block- and filesizes.
No way. The first hint that something is wrong is, after the

In that case, I suppose it would be best to try a snapshot of the 1.6
branch half way between the 1.6 release and now.

Do date based checkouts work nowadays?

Install 1.6.1_RC2 ...

Hello!

Having cross-compiled the 1.6.1_RC2 from i386
the install process still crashed with '/ full',
but all information have been written to disk up to
that point. And the reboot worked this time, without
any disk corruption. As this version should be
roughly the same I checked last time from releng.netbsd.org,
I cannot explain why it worked this time.

BTW, is it really neccessary to mount the discs async during
sysinst? Might be this is a reason for failure, although
less reproducable.
