FAQ section for features reported as bugs?

Hi all,

I was having a look through the general FAQ, and wondered what people
thought about adding a section to deal with questions about features
that are sometimes misconstrued as bugs. Or to borrow from the Perl
documentation's phrase, that are "traps for the unwary".

A case in point: I was doing some testing with a serial console, and
rebooted the machine that the console was directed to, finding myself
in the kernel debugger when I next checked the target machine. Being a
serial console neophyte, I wondered if this was a bug, so I searched the
PRs and found these:

http://www.netbsd.org/cgi-bin/query-pr-single.pl?number=17919
http://www.netbsd.org/cgi-bin/query-pr-single.pl?number=36884

Something like this could just as easily go under the existing "common
(and less common) problems" section, but I wondered if there was some
value to having an explicit listing of items sometimes reported as bugs
that are no such thing. I've seen other projects that do this. (There
could be a link to this list on the bug reporting instructions too.)

Regards,

Dave

Absolute - a very good idea! Please do it.

Okay. Any NetBSD developers on here who have any favourites they'd
like to see on the list?

From what I can see, Gnats doesn't have a category in use such as
"invalid" or "not a bug" that PRs can be closed with, so I can't search
against that. When I get a chance I'll have a look through some of the
recent PRs to see if I can spot anything.

Regards,

Dave

NetBSD Guide section 8.9 needs fixes

NetBSD Guide section 8.9 needs fixes
near

As usual, both pkg_add and make install will fetch the needed packages
automatically, so there is no need to go through the dependencies
     manually.

     # cd /usr/pkgsrc/x11/windowmaker
     # make depends-list
     xpm-3.4k
     jpeg-6b
     pkglibtool-1.2p2
     giflib-3.0
     libproplist-0.9.1
     tiff-3.5.2

First, there is no target 'depends-list' that shows dependancies
(make show-var VARNAME=_ALL_DEPENDS ?).
Second, it is be better to change x11/windowmaker to wm/windowmaker.

where are docs on COMPAT_* and pkgsrc/emulators/compat_*?

I was googling about NetBSD's backward binary compatibility but didn't see
any one webpage about it.

Do we have any single document that explains kernel COMPAT_* and using
pkgsrc/emulators/compat_*?

With examples...

[update] Using WaveLAN IEEE under NetBSD

 - Hi developers,

According to TODO list, some documents will still need update and I
want to bring my contribution. For that, I would like to know if someone
has already begun the update about wavelan or if I can do it.

I hope a little bit help about wpa_supplicant which seems pretty obscure
(especially about wep encryption).

I don't know about single document, but options(4) and compat_*(8) man
pages are containing a lot of glue which you're looking for...
