Guide Update

All,

Just another quick update of the NetBSD Guide:

	- Grant will be making some fixes for markup in the near future
	- I updated CCD and CVS Chapters
	- I removed author credits in each chapter and put them all in
          the acknowledgements appendix.

What still needs to be done:

	- The following chapters need a full review/update:

		ap-contrib
		ap-xml
		chap-2boot
		chap-boot
		chap-cons
		chap-inst
		chap-kernel
		chap-mail
		chap-misc
		chap-x

          I think the rest are okay after I reviewed them, of course
          I could be wrong :)

	- Translations, translations, translations ....
	- ps, text, and pdf targets (there is some work going on
	  here ATM).

I think what might be a good idea here is to have a list (which
I can maintain) of chapters that are finsihed and those that 
still need to be updated. 

Since we are lagging, our target is document for the next major
NetBSD release, 2.0. That means look at -current systems, not
1.6.1.

I *think* once it is "2.0" ready, we our going to create a branch
for it. I realize this is a moving target, but, a lot of things do not 
change, for example, DNS or using vi :)

Of course, there is some irony here, I am out a -current system
right now. My test system was reappropiated by my employer >;-(
so I am depending on submissions (not that I would review the
whole Guide myself anyhow ... )

I will come up with a list and slap it up, someplace. If anyone has
any suggestions for where this list should live, fire it back
here to netbsd-docs.

to build the translated XML Docbook target. I forgot that
little tiny detail :)

 OK.  What I did is the following:

 First, I made a lot of fixes (markup, indentation, entity substitution,
 public identifier resolution, and more) to the current NetBSD Guide.
 Some are essential, and some are for consistency and/or preparation
 for further improvements.  The current version of the guide uses xsltproc
 to typeset the entire document, but it cannot generate any printable versions.
 Strictly, although it is possible when using XSL-FO, there are
 toolchains in Java only as far as I know.  So, they cannot be used on
 NetBSD now, and most of them work for English docs only.

 The aforementioned changes are quite large and structural, so I do not
 know the changes are acceptable for you.  I have considered the following:
 1) we should be able to typeset the guide using both xsltproc and Jade,
 because xsltproc can generate no printable formats, and Jade can do so at
 the moment  2) more flexible customization layer of the documents and the
 stylesheets.  I think it is mandatory for localization work from my
 experience, and the current implementation is too poor  3) making the
 markups and the document structure more reasonable.

 I put a tarball of htdocs/guide snapshot I used to typeset at
 <URI: http://www.allbsd.org/~hrs/NetBSD/netbsd-guide-hrs-patched.tar.gz >.
 "cd guide/en && make install" generates versions of html, html-split,

Okay, I was literally following what was already in there :)

Yeah, that does make more sense huh? 

I will bet that there are _many errors_ like those spread throughout
the Guide.

Critical mass. While many authors initially donated sections or
chapters, since then, many others have additions, fixes, and
so forth. Grant and I came to the conclusion we would end up
with umpteen names in each chapter ... it would make more sense
to have them all in one place with their work credited.

I would like, at some point, for the acknowledgements to be either
before or right after the index page. That way people get the impression
the Guide *is* a community effort up front versus going all the
way to an appendix (which many users probably do not read).
