FYI,
I sent a PR about it:
http://www.netbsd.org/cgi-bin/query-pr-single.pl?number=42688

Note that this PR says acroread 8 should be removed.
Since it has same security issue, and it isn't a good thing that
NetBSD is weaker than RHEL from security POV (Red Hat already dropped
acroread 8 from supported packages).

Is there any objection?

The PR does not mention the voices that were previously raised against
deleting acroread4 & 5.
(I don't care for version 8).

What was the issue at that time?
Is the reason still applicable to the current situation?

JFYI:
All of acroread packages in pkgsrc are marked as EOL,
so users should already know using vulnerable, out-of-date version.

As I already said, all of these mails were sent before my mail.
i.e. All of then are not objection to me.
Also, I'm not the person who started the thread.

Ah, I thought the thread you mentioned was something different.

I think your memory is not right.
As you see in the following mail archive:
	http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-users/tindex.html
the following my message was the last mail in the thread:
	http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-users/2010/01/28/msg011585.html

And the message was the only one I sent to the thread.
i.e. I didn't get any answer in the thread.
Thus, there was no objection against my message, of course.

Or, am I missing something?

What users? My laptop, has me, and that's it. If I don't use it,
no-one uses it. Now what was that danger?

It just shows that it exists, and that NetBSD has the same stuff available

That's not entirely true, because in order to give users that choice,
pkgsrc developers have to maintain the package. It might not be a
tremendous amount of work to maintain it, but it is still *some*.

If you want to keep on using an antediluvian Acroread, it's your choice.
You'll always be able to find the files in the Attic to maintain your
own local package.

As an intermediary solution, why not creating an "unsupported" category,
that would never be automatically compiled by any means, and would only
receive packages whose maintainablity costs greatly outweighs their
value while remaining used by a vocal enough fraction of the pkgsrc user
community? No PRs for such packages would be accepted.

I am certainly not suggesting that all deleted packages should go into
that... ahem, retirement castle (nice choice of words, eh?).

pkgsrc-2009Q4 sparc binaries available

Hi,
The first round of bulk builds of pkgsrc-2009Q4 on NetBSD/sparc,
4.0.1 and 5.0.1 have completed. The binaries are available from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/sparc/
This is also mirrored on ftp.fr.netbsd.org and probably others.

As for previous branches, new builds will be launched when pullups to the
stable branch are done.
