In Memoriam of Itojun

Jun-Ichiro itojun Hagino joined the NetBSD project in June of 1999. In
the eight years since that time, he contributed many hours to the
betterment of the project.

In addition to his work on the KAME project, which provided NetBSD's
IPv6 and IPsec support, Itojun also participated as a member of the Core
Group, which leads the development of NetBSD by making technical design
decisions. Itojun also contributed as a member of the Security-Officer
team.

Due to Itojun's efforts, NetBSD was the first open source operating
system with a production ready IPv6 networking stack, which was included
in the base system before many people knew what IPv6 was.

Those of us who had the pleasure of meeting him in person enjoyed his
demeanor and company, and his absence will be noted by all.

                                        Sent on behalf of
                                        The NetBSD Project

NetBSD 4.0 Release Candidate 4 available for download

Hello,

on behalf of the NetBSD Release Engineering team, I am happy to
announce the availability of NetBSD 4.0 Release Candidate 4.

Binaries and ISOs are available from

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-4.0_RC4

The list of changes from the 3.0 release is available in the release
notes, online at
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-4.0_RC4/i386/INSTALL.html#Changes%20Between%20The%20NetBSD%203.0%20and%204.0%20Releases

This release candidate has several bug fixes and other changes since the
previous release candidate - RC3.

Most important bug fixes are:
- a transition mechanism from sendmail to postfix was implemented. If you
use sysinst for upgrade, it will ask if the mailer configuration should
  be switched to postfix.
- a security issue in OpenSSL (CVE-2007-4995) was fixed.
- an earlier pullup to ipf has been reverted, because it prevented RDR
sessions from expiring, see PR kern/37037 and kern/37174.
- a bug in MTRR handling causing a reboot on amd64 when starting the X
server has been fixed - PR port-amd64/37043.
- a security issue in FAST_IPSEC has been fixed.
- bio(4) has been updated to handle RAID volumes larger than 4GB -
  PR kern/36556.
- fix a heap corruption in rpc.lockd, PR bin/37236.

Summary of 8th NetBSD Hackathon

This email was sent to me by Adam Hoka, who set up and managed the 8th
NetBSD hackathon, this time devoted to pkgsrc. What was remarkable
about this hackathon was that the main players all came from outside
the NetBSD developer community. Personally, I'd like to thank
everyone who took part, for some excellent results - it's lovely to
see such enthusiasm from our users, developers and supporters in the
wider community.

Alistair Crooks

Now over to Adam...

Summary for the 8th NetBSD hackathon

During the hackathon, we have closed more than thirty PRs, lot of them from
the 1.6 times. We have also made patches and small fixes that still
need to be commited. Of course we had a lot of fun together too. :)

Special thanks goes to the developers who gave us hints and worked together
with us to make a better pkgsrc.
Thank you very much Alistair, Hubert, J?rg and Roland!

I would also like to say thank you to everybody who was there to help.
You've made a nice job guys!

If you have a bit of time to check and commit our patches, you can find them
in the wiki. The links to the patches are in the tables:

The NetBSD Core Team

After more than 2 years work in the NetBSD core team, Valeriy Ushakov
(uwe <at> NetBSD.org) has decided that he would like to devote more time to
other areas within the NetBSD project. Valeriy remains as port-hpcsh
maintainer, and my resident guru on English literature. I know this has
been a difficult decision for Valeriy to make, but he would not be
talked out of it. We would like to thank him profusely for all the
time he has spent on core, and for all the excellent work he has done
in guiding NetBSD over the last few years - it wouldn't be the same
product without him.

The Board of Directors of the NetBSD Foundation have considered the
optimal size of the core team - it needs to be small enough to make
technical decisions quickly, and yet large enough to consider all the
views of the membership, and all aspects of the NetBSD and pkgsrc
projects. The resounding view was that a 5-man core team was the best
and most representative size.

Accordingly, we have asked Quentin Garnier (cube <at> NetBSD.org) if he
would consider joining the core team, and he has kindly accepted.
Quentin brings with him an overwhelming knowledge of kernel areas like
autoconf, from his work rationalising and extending the config syntax,
and an overall innate knowledge of what the right thing is in "DTRT".
We welcome him to the core team.

The Board of Directors of The NetBSD Foundation would like to announce
that the new NetBSD core team will consist of:

        Alistair Crooks (agc <at> NetBSD.org)
        Quentin Garnier (cube <at> NetBSD.org)
