Announcing NetBSD 1.5.3

                          Announcing NetBSD 1.5.3
                          =======================

The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that release 1.5.3 of the
NetBSD operating system is now available.

NetBSD 1.5.3 is a maintenance release for users of NetBSD 1.5.2,
1.5.1, 1.5 and earlier releases, which provides the following
   updates relative to 1.5.2:

    * A number of security problems have been fixed
    * Some performance fixes have been incorporated
    * Improved device support in some existing drivers
    * Some new device drivers have been added

Please note that a new major release of NetBSD, version 1.6, is
currently in beta test and should be released within a few weeks.
NetBSD 1.6 will be a substantial functional improvement over
   NetBSD 1.5.3.

A complete list of changes are available in the CHANGES-1.5.3 file
in top directory of the NetBSD 1.5.3 release tree. Also, included
later in this announcement, is a list of the major changes added
   between NetBSD 1.5.2 and 1.5.3.

Complete source and binaries for NetBSD 1.5.3 are available for
download at many sites around the world. A list of download sites via
FTP, AnonCVS, SUP, and other methods is provided at the end of this
announcement; the latest list of available download sites may also be
   found at: http://www.netbsd.org/mirrors/

Donations for server upgrades

As many of you know, we are in the process of upgrading several
project machines. So far, we have upgraded the anonymous CVS server
and FTP server to machines that can handle the capacity needed for
the 1.6 and 1.5.3 releases.

The hardware isn't cheap, and we're asking for donations to The NetBSD
Foundation to help offset this cost, and hope to raise enough for
other project machines to be upgraded as well.

Our target is $10,000 USD. Over 60% of this goes to the public
servers. The remainder will be used for other upgrades and
replacements as needed.

There are several ways to send us payments:

A check written out to "The NetBSD Foundation."

Please mail checks to:

        The NetBSD Foundation, Inc.
        235 W48th Street, Apt 22A
        New York, NY 10036
        USA

We can also accept paypal transfers to paypal <at> netbsd.org

Please note that TNF is not yet a 501(c)(3) charity. We are working on
changing that but until then, donations are not tax deductible.

OpenBSD moderation removal

Greetings,

As some of you may have noticed, the NetBSD mailing lists have been
configured to selectively moderate postings originating from the
"openbsd.org" domain. This rule was instated to protect the NetBSD
mailing lists from abuse or denial of service attacks by an OpenBSD
developer (Theo De Raadt), who some time ago threatened to attack
the NetBSD project machines. In a reaction to this threat, domains
under his control were blackholed and moderation of the mailing
lists was activated.

Unfortunately this kind of moderation had the unfortunate side
effect of impeding communication between OpenBSD and NetBSD developers
(unnecessary rejection due to moderator absense, approval delays,
etc.). It was not our intent; it was assumed that most OpenBSD
developers would not post from their <at> openbsd.org addresses, just
as most NetBSD developers do not use their <at> netbsd.org addresses
to send mail.

At this point in time, we have decided that the inconvenience to the
OpenBSD developers greatly outweighs the risk of postings in poor
taste from a single individual, thus we are removing the selective
moderation against the "openbsd.org" domain effective immediately.
Please note that the NetBSD mailing lists have always been moderated
against spam since they allow postings from non-members. Such
moderation will remain in place.

We would like to remind our mailing list participants, that they
should construct sentences with greater care, refrain from using
