Re: Can we make it harder to get NetBSD?

Sorry, more than 1 click is too many.

Seriously.

OK, perhaps 2 is ok if needed.

I'd suggest this:

(1) Put "Download NetBSD now!" on the home page, or even most pages.
This link takes you directly to a page with:

(2) "click to download NetBSD 4.0 32-bit Intel and AMD" and "click to
download NetBSD 4.0 for 64-bit Intel and AMD" links. Each downloads an ISO.

(3) Also on that "click" page, are links to ways to get packages,
source, etc. And links for other architectures.

Before anyone flames me and claims that macppc or amiga or alpha matter
anymore, I'm not excluding you. I'm just doing what any web site
analyst would say -- make the most common tasks trivial and clear.
People wanting to throw NetBSD on random hardware can afford to read a
bit further down a page.

Re: Can we make it harder to get NetBSD?

Unfortunately, It's really hard to information quickly on the site.
I have to use the search most of the time, because some stuff are
impossible to find.

Things I (and other people I know) need often:

Changelog
Supported Hardware
Direct link to ISOs and pkgsrc tarball.

And having two menubar (under and above the logo) on the main page is a
but confusing.

Can we improve this?
Can I help somehow to do so?

Showcasing subprojects

I was thinking it might be beneficial to showcase some of netbsd's
subprojects on the main site or even in the main navigation.

pkgsrc and ATF come to mind. What else?

Some other stuff to show might be things that need work -- like the
SoC projects that are mostly done, but need finishing for final
inclusion. NetBSD-forge. It would also be a good place to show
active branches.

Vintage Computer Festival Europe

Hello everyone,

on April, 26th/27th 2008 the Vintage Computer Festival Europe[1] takes
place in Munich, Germany.

Bernhard Riedel ("Burnhard"), and I ("Mjoellnir") will be there. Bernhard
on Saturday and Sunday, and I on Sunday. I will exhibit a Sun SPARCstation
IPX [2] with a NetBSD 3.1, X-Server and several tools to play with, and to
show that machines like this once were actually used in everyday
office-life... ;)

Three weeks to go

Hi,

In three weeks, the BSD masses will be gathering in Ottawa
for the 5th annual BSDCan. The schedule is phenomenal,
even if I do say so myself.

If you are interested in spreading the word about BSDCan,
and getting your name out there, consider reporting on one
or more of the talks for USENIX. Rik Farrow tells me that
the summaries will be published in the August 2008 issue of ;login:.

A summary can be as short as a paragraph or so. It's pretty easy,
and Rik provides past summaries as examples. If you can type,
you can do a summary.

Sign up here: http://www.spirit.com/cgi-new/bsdcan08

If you have not made your plans for BSDCan 2008 yet, you better
get started before all the good rooms are gone and you have
to stay off-campus. :)

Let me quote this in full from O'Reilly's Allison Randal's blog[1]: ``For
the 4th year running, Google and O'Reilly will present a set of Open
Source Awards at OSCON 2008. The awards recognize individual contributors
who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, creativity, and
collaboration in the development of Open Source Software. Past recipients
for 2005-2007 include Doc Searls, Jeff Waugh, Gerv Markham, Julian Seward,
David Heinemeier Hansson, Karl Fogel, David Recordon, and Paul Vixie.

The nomination process is open to the entire open source community,
closing May 15th, 2008. Send your nominations to osawards AT oreilly DOT
com. Nominations should include the name of the recipient, any associated
project/org, suggested title for the award ("Best Hacker", "Best Community
Builder", etc.), and a description of why you are nominating the
individual. Google and O'Reilly employees cannot be nominated.''

Who's your #1 NetBSD person? Discuss at netbsd-advocacy <at> NetBSD.org,
suggest to osawards <at> oreilly.com!

BSDCan - two weeks to go!

Hi,

In this announcement:

  - Countdown
  - Accommodation
  - bring a cable
  - Sponsors

COUNTDOWN

BSDCan 2008 starts in two weeks. By this time in a fortnight,
the people for the tutorials will have arrived. I also want to
mention
that the FreeBSD DevSummit has more than 80 people invited
this year.

ACCOMMODATION

If you have not already booked your accommodation for BSDCan 2008
chances are, you will not be able to stay on campus. By all means,
call them and ask, but most people have been getting "no vacancy".

Not to worry. We have you covered. There is nearby accommodation,
and it's not much more expensive than residence.

Les Suites have two deals for us:
One bedroom suite, one bed, one fold-out bed. $149 a night plus taxes
(1-2 persons)
Two bedroom suite, three beds, one fold-out bed. $209 a night plus
