	For a completely left field answer, I've been enjoying 
playing with the hackability of the ability to load custom firmware 
into my Canon Powershot. I didn't choose the camera (it is my wifes 
discard now I have got her a DSLR), but its proved to be heaps of 
fun. It lets you do things like add time lapse scripts, use motion 
detection, super fast exposures, scripted bracketing of shots etc

	Anything similar for other camera brands? Or am I always 
going to want to have a Canon digic 2/3 camera around?

	I find you always want at least one spare card on any photo 
heavy expedition, Even if you don't forget to download your photos, 
someone else will.

Yeah, looks like you got a good one.

Here's my advice on taking pictures with a Lumix: Use the lowest ISO  
possible and live in Aperture Priority mode. Aperture settings are  
what makes the difference between a snapshot and a photograph.

That is so cool. The efficiency is that thing that might make this viable and it sounds low tech enough to be reliable.

Since the water flow rate requirements are so low, I imagine that you could spread this along a lot of the river systems as well as tidal areas.

Heck, if you have a deep enough creek on your property, that doesn't go dry, you could use a small version to replace solar.

I want one.
