FreeBSD 4.8 Now Available

I am happy to announce the availability of FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE, the
latest release of the FreeBSD -STABLE development branch. Since
FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE in October 2002, we have made conservative updates
to a number of software programs in the base system, dealt with known
security issues, and added initial support for Firewire,
HyperThreading, and other new hardware technologies.

For a complete list of new features and known problems, please see the
release notes and errata list, available here:

     http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/4.8R/relnotes.html
     http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/4.8R/errata.html

This release does not include all of the new technologies that were
introduced with FreeBSD 5.0 in January. FreeBSD 4.X releases offer a
more conservative platform than FreeBSD 5.0 at this time. For more
information about the distinctions between FreeBSD 4.X and 5.0, or for
general information about the FreeBSD release engineering activities,
please see :

Availability
------------

FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE supports the i386 and alpha architectures and can
be installed directly over the net using the boot floppies or copied
to a local NFS/FTP server. Distributions for the i386 are available
now. As of this writing, the final builds for the alpha architecture

New mailing list: performance <at> FreeBSD.org

I'm pleased to announce the formation of a new mailing list dedicated
to the performance of FreeBSD under high load or extreme conditions.

Address: performance <at> FreeBSD.org
List URL: http://lists.FreeBSD.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-performance
List admin: freebsd-performance-owner <at> freebsd.org

The performance <at> mailing list exists to provide a place for hackers,
administrators, and/or concerned parties to discuss performance
related topics pertaining to FreeBSD. Acceptable topics includes
talking about FreeBSD installations that are either under high load,
are experiencing performance problems, or are pushing the limits of
FreeBSD. Concerned parties that are willing to work toward improving
the performance of FreeBSD are highly encouraged to subscribe to this
list. This is a highly technical list ideally suited for experienced
FreeBSD users, hackers, or administrators interested in keeping
FreeBSD fast, robust, and scalable.

The performance <at> list is not a question-and-answer list that replaces
reading through documentation, but it is a place to make contributions
or inquire about unanswered performance related topics. Answered
questions and performance related FAQ's will end up in a compiled list
or integrated into the existing documentation.

Flames, trolls, wars, and bikesheds will not be tolerated.
Constructive, progressive posts, and patches, however, are very
welcome.

Examples of questions that would be appropriate on the performance <at>
list include (if they haven't already been answered or incorporated

FreeBSD 4.8 CDs now shipping

FreeBSD Mall is happy to announce the availability of FreeBSD 4.8
CDROMs. Subscribers should receive their CDROMs next week. Everyone
else can order the four-disc set online at http://www.freebsdmall.com.

FreeBSD 5.0 CDROMs and DVDs are also available and have proved more
popular than we ever expected. FreeBSD 5.0 is a "new technology"
release that offers a lot of new features but without all of the
refinement that has gone into the 4.x branch of FreeBSD.

For those who missed it, FreeBSD was recently featured on TechTV. A
RealVideo stream of the segment is available from the press release,
here:

http://www.offmyserver.com/cgi-bin/oms/news/techtv_031403.html

Stay tuned for more FreeBSD exposure in the coming months. We've got
a 10 year anniversary and a possible showdown with Linux on national
television coming up.

In addition to CD and DVD products, we also have a large collection of
FreeBSD shirts, hats, jackets, boxer shorts, stickers, case-plates,
mugs, mouse pads, and other promotional materials.
