BSDA exam objectives released (press release)

BSD Certification Group Publishes BSD Associate Exam Objectives

October 6, 2005 -- The BSD Certification Group announced the
publication of the exam objectives for the BSD Associate (BSDA)
certification exam. The BSDA certification is designed to be an
entry-level certification on BSD Unix systems administration. This
certification is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2006.

The exam objectives are detailed in a Certification Requirements
document which also contains the official description for the BSDA
certification exam, a description of the intended audience, and a
chart of applicable commands and documentation to assist the exam
candidates in their studies.

"Understanding concepts and their realisation is most important in
both education and certifications," said Hubert Feyrer, a member
of the BSD Certification Group. "In this document, we identify
areas where there are differences and similarities for the BSDs,
so common concepts can be learned as well as by what specific
implementations each of the systems achieves their feature standout."

"This document provides resources upon which students, teachers,
and we as a certification group can build BSD training and
certification upon," said Feyrer who has been teaching university
and college classes on system administration and open source for
several years.

The BSDA exam objectives will be made available in several languages
and are available for download from the BSD Certification Group's website.

Upcoming FreeBSD events

The upcoming events list is looking a bit bare. Are there additional
events that will have a FreeBSD precense that we can announce on the
website? I think we should add GufiCon in Italy (right after
EuroBSDCon), USENIX (assuming a few BSD papers?), maybe LISA? I don't
think a date is set for next year's BSDCan yet. What about some of
the regional Linux gatherings. Does anyone have current plans for
FreeBSD participation that we can promote on the website? Thanks,

This month's ;login:

Hi,

This month's paper ;login: features two FreeBSD articles, one by yours truly.

The articles are not available online for a year, but if you're
interested in SMPng (by yours truly) or lesser-known security
features, this is the issue to grab.

Quote from the editorial: "But BSD envy is nothing new." :-)

Bind within src-contrib

Hi,

I was attempting to build a minimal supfile, when I noticed that bind was included within contrib. This to me
seems like something that should be included within the ports tree, or atleast be included in a portion of
the tree with less crucial software.

I personally do not see a reason for this, but please enlighten me on why this is done.

How would you like a system with no host(1), dig(1), or nslookup(1)? I
personally consider these tools essential for a freebsd system.

Are these utilities used anywhere else in FreeBSD, such as the startup
scripts? Are they something required by the vast majority of users? If not,
I wouldn't consider them "essential". That doesn't mean I would move them to
ports, as there's a lot of other non-essential software in the base system
(biff, indent, etc.).

I welcome the effort to renew the Web site. But I regret to report that the resulting web site looks awful!!!
Besides, it hasn't bene tested properly -- it fails to display properly on various browsers, ie., Apple's
Safari Web Browser and related browsers.

I for one, would like going back to the old web site. But as a minimum, you need to clean up the current web site
and ensure it displays properly on all browsers... something the old web sire did properly, by the way!
