Hi,
There is not one mention of any bsd on this site, let alone freebsd.
Do we have any Norwegian speakers on the list who could talk to them
and find out why there is no mention of any bsd?

FreeBSD vs Linux on TechTV September 2, 7pm EDT (Live)

Matt Olander and I will do another (hopefully longer) segment on the
"Screen Savers" show against some guys from Linux Journal this
afternoon. We're mostly going to be showing off various cool GUI apps
on one box while an install takes place on another box. Our original
pitch to them was for benchmarking and server tasks, but there will be
absolutely none of that as it wasn't deemed very television-friendly.
So GUI eyecandy it shall be. It's live and if the last show is any
indication it's likely to be rather impromptu.

Recordings (on tape or mpeg) of the episode would be much appreciated.

Re: FreeBSD vs Linux on TechTV September 2, 7pm EDT (Live)

I hope these boxes are preconfigured. See if you can fit ports in
anywhere... also see if you can fit in the FS structure. Those are two
things that go unnoticed and are two things that Linux has HUGE problems
with -- packages suck and there's really no standardized filesystem.
Installing and configuring packages is a nightmare. I'd suggest
installing something from ports (I dunno, blackbox or xmame or
something) and display how orderly it goes :). It can't hurt to show
that FBSD Is Consistent.

Unfortunately, we're going head to head with a kernel that's being used
in a lot of desktop-oriented things. There's no way FBSD will win a
desktop battle... especially not when the Linux guys break out VMware 4
-- which is one of a few apps that FBSD can't emulate due to its kernel
hooks.

All the same, I wish you good luck! And if someone makes an MPEG, let me
know where to get it :)

if the last show is any indication, we'll be lucky if the set doesn't
spontaneously explode ;)

yeah, if somebody grabs an avi for me, I'll convert it and through it
up on the realserver.

yup, that's the plan. working on the box now. we had originally planned
a server 'shootout' but I think both the linux guys and the TechTV
producers wanted something more 'fun'

yeah, true. hopefully, they didn't think of that ;)
I tried working with the transgaming.com folks to get some windows games
going, but they hadn't tested on FreeBSD for a few revs and it didn't
fly...

cheers,

Ergh. Forgot to send this to the list.

When is this going live? I can try to run a few shareware apps in Wine
really quickly... it usually works without giving too much crap :) I'm
sure it's been shown on techtv before, but playing xbill can't hurt ;)
Also perhaps that nethack GUI -- it looks pretty fun (but I dunno, never
played it, just seen screenshots). Also don't forget to get flash player
6 working under linux emu. They'll definitely throw that at you -- and
if they don't, reinforce that it's there in bsd as well ;)

Anyway, lemme know when this is going live and I'll try to think of a
few more ideas :)

Guys, just make sure the apps you show don't have "Linux" logo somewhere, as
some X11 apps come with that cute penguin by default ;)

Some ideas for next episodes:

I'd suggest the demonstration of Linux emulation - for example, by showing a
working Oracle installation or launching some Linux-only games.

I'd also suggest talking about Java.

I'd also suggest talking about NVidia drivers.

I'd also... man, there are so many topics. Hope you can get enough TV time
to show all those to the public.

Regards,

Re: FreeBSD vs Linux on TechTV September 2, 7pm EDT (Live)

How about xmms with some plugins?
And the game criticalmass, very addictive, very fast.

My just 2 cents. ;-)

We may launch StarOffice 6 this time. Matt was working with the WineX
guys trying to get some Windows games to load (people have done it in
FreeBSD) but couldn't get them working.

> I'd also suggest talking about Java.

We're certainly going to talk about Java, and the new Java packages
are loaded on the machine, but I'd like to "show it off". Any ideas
about Java apps that we can show off?

Something we want to do is use Konqueror & kmplayer to browse to
apple.com/trailers and watch teasers in browser.

> I'd also suggest talking about NVidia drivers.

Yes, we have an NVidia card in our box and have the drivers working
with hardware accel in X.

We won't have anywhere near enough time.
