============
GNU Tar is an archiver program. It is used to create and manipulate files
that are actually collections of many other files; the program provides
users with an organized and systematic method of controlling a large
amount of data. Despite its name, that is an acronym of "tape archiver",
GNU Tar is able to direct its output to any available devices, files or
other programs, it may as well access remote devices or files. The main
areas of usage for GNU Tar are: storage, backup and transportation.

ALIGNOF fails on cygwin

Hi.

I just built binutils on current cygwin and found a new failure,
ALIGNOF, and thought you might wanted to know.

Running /usr/local/src/trunk/src/ld/testsuite/ld-scripts/alignof.exp ...
/usr/local/src/trunk/objdir-binutils/ld/../gas/as-new -o
tmpdir/alignof.o
/usr/local/src/trunk/src/ld/testsuite/ld-scripts/alignof.s
/usr/local/src/trunk/objdir-binutils/ld/ld-new -o tmpdir/alignof -T
/usr/local/src/trunk/src/ld/testsuite/ld-scripts/alignof.t
tmpdir/alignof.o
/usr/local/src/trunk/objdir-binutils/ld/../binutils/nm-new
tmpdir/alignof >tmpdir/nm.out
alignof_text != 64
FAIL: ALIGNOF

Re: ALIGNOF fails on cygwin

sorry, this should have gone to binutils' list, not cygwin's...

freetype1-coontrib utilities available from me

I have managed to produce working binaries in Cygwin environment for
freetype1-contrib utilities like ttf2tfm which lets you use TrueType
fonts from inside tetex installation. I do not know how popular this
setup is with other users or whether people prefer to use MikTeX or
refere to MS fonts in their documents but if there is some interest I
can make it available, of course.

Re: pdftex.cfg is missing in tetex distribution in Cygwin

No, looks rather like mecnahism is obsolete and is not used in newer versions
anymore.

groups command shows user in group users while it is not

I have installed cygwin on a slihghtly in XPhome

i created a user foo in xphome and trew the account OUT of the group users
with the command net localgroup users foo /DEL

the command net user foo does therefore show the user foo not to be anymore in
the group users
Full Name foo
... stuff left away.....
Local Group Memberships *gast *SshAllow
Global Group memberships *None
The command completed succesfully

i have installed sshd and login via an ssh client to cygwin as user foo

i give the command groups

i see

$ groups
gast None Users SshAllow

Question....
1. How come i see the user is still in the group Users ?
2. Is there a way to get the user foo OUT of the group Users ?

Did you regenerate the /etc/group file with mkgroup after removing the
user?

ssh config

Is there a way to enable X11 forwarding by default so that I don't have
to run "ssh -XY hostname" and can just run "ssh hostname"?
I found a way for me to do it via a ~/.ssh/config file but I'm looking
for a way to do it globally. I have seen it (on Linux systems) in
/etc/ssh/ssh_config before...I tried it on cygwin with no success.
Does openssh on cygwin look for the global configuration file in another
place or does it not support one at all?

Thanks,
~Eric

On Cygwin, the global SSH configuration is in /etc/ssh_config, which, I
believe, is created for you by the ssh-user-config script.

Preparing for a new computer

I have installed four different variations of Cygwin on my current
computer. The first was B.20, my initial exposure to this tool kit. The
next one was buried in an SDK for Systech RCS port servers, and I didn't
know it was there until after it began installing. The target for this
was a 68EN363 CPU. The third was likewise embedded in an SDK for the
Digi ConnectME with an ARM-7. The final install was the current build. I
did this one with my eyes wide open, but still got some surprises. I am
no longer using the Digi product, but the Systech build process still
works with no issues.

However, the computer I have is past its replacement threshold, having
been out of warranty for eight months now. So I am working on the
configuration I will need for the new box, which should be arriving this
month as we just moved into a new fiscal year. But as I look at the
drive partitioning, I have a few questions about how to set this up. I
know that I will have to install the Systech SDK again, probably before
I do the full Cygwin install.

The drive will be partitioned into three logical drives. Drive C is
created and backed up by a Ghost image provided by IT. This contains
MS-Windows, Office, help desk and accounting applications required on
every desktop in the company. This drive will never be backed up, since
that image can be restored at any time.

Drive D will be where I install the applications, tools and SDKs that I
need for my work. That backup will consist of a row of CDs on my
bookshelf. If the drive dies, or MS-Windows self destructs, these will
all have to be reinstalled from those CDs to rebuild the registry. I
plan to use the "download to disk" option for the install to create an
image and burn a snapshot of the Cygwin installation files.
