Amusingly - nano with every available feature turned on, is only 5% larger
than cat + sed.
It is 45% larger then ed though.
I wont bother comparing it to vim or emacs...

(Okay so i ignored library dependcies in the above comparisons - I dont
think i'm cheating Too much)

You have multiple copies of cygwin1.dll on your system. Either that or you
have not rebooted since upgrading the Cygwin package. If the latter reboot,
if not send along the output of `cygcheck -svr' an a *non-compressed*
plain-text attachment to the list.

RE: Problem configuring sshd on Win2k

Thank you for the quick response. Indeed, there were two cygwin1.dll files on my system...and I didn't know it.

Re: Installation problem.

Hi Igor,

1) I did remove the prev. installation (redhat), removed the
files in C:\cygwin. How does one remove registry information ?
I've never dealt with Windows admin, so could you pls. help
out ?

2) I "Installed from Internet" twice, from the same ftp
location, selecting different packages each time,
with rootdir = C:\cygwin
     localdir = C:\cyg_cache.

3) Please find the setup.log and setup.log.full files
attached.

Thank you,
best regards,
Deepa

Re: WinNT/Cygwin.dll 1.3.2x-1 problem

5.. In all environments I am unable to download my distribution to a CD-ROM
and then use the CD to update existing Cygwin environments. Not all of the
computers that I use are internet capable and the ability to update from a
CD-ROM is necessary. This issue started with Cygwin.dll 1.3.21-1 which was
distributed towards the end of March and has continued with the current
version (1.3.22-1). thanks art

What is the nature of "unable to... update existing Cygwin environments"?
IOW what error message stopped you from succeeding?

This is the hot-button. I will research your other questions (thanks).

Note that a similar problem occurs in Win95 (see: running setup does
nothing: David T-G).

This is the sequence of events in both the WinNT and Win2k environments):
1. An existing version of Cygwin exists and is to be updated. In my case,
it is stored at C:\root.

2. A CD-ROM with a new version of Cygwin and the latest version of
setup.exe is used and selected as the download source.

3. Setup.exe is copied to disk and executed. This is just to keep the disk
version of setup current to the installation.

4. (Under the new setup) MD5 checksums are calculated and packages in the
old Cygwin are properly identified and reported. That is, the setup window
to allow selection of applications to be installed is presented for user
input with old application versions correctly identified and marked for

Re: being an idiot, transferring files 'tween PC and remote server via cygwin

S.Wiesner,

Re: Installation problem.

1) Tools like regedt32 (on Win2k/XP) or regedit (on Win9x and NT) should
let you remove the offending registry keys. Another possibility is to
find Cygwin's "umount.exe" on your hard drive (if it's still there) and
run "umount -A -c".

2 and 3) This is really weird. You have selected "Network Install", but
the setup log just stops abruptly in the middle of a download... Which
version of setup are you using? Can you try the latest snapshot from
<http://cygwin.com/setup-snapshots/> and report the results?

If you still have "cygcheck.exe" around, could you also please run it and
post the output?

Thanks,
	Igor

FYI, this is unlikely to be related, as in David's case setup doesn't
display a window at all (IIUC).

On windows Start/Run
1. execute "regedit"
2. click on "My computer" inside regedit

3. now navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus Solutions
4. delete it (this is for current user)

5. now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygnus Solutions
6. delete it (this is for all users, so u should have admin authority)

Cheers
