RFC: GStreamer 0.8 removal

I'm currently in the midst of a massive multimedia update, which leads
me to the following question:

GStreamer 0.8 has been deprecated upstream in favour of the much
improved (and more portable, partially thanks to contributions from
yours truly  ) 0.10 series.  In addition, a few plugins (namely:
flac, wavpack, xine) no longer compile due to API changes in their
related libraries.

The following packages currently require GStreamer 0.8:

* gnome/gamp:  Apparently dead upstream (last release May '04).

* gnome/jamboree:  Last release September '04; website has also disappeared.

* gstreamer/gstreamer-editor:  Development stalled upstream (last CVS
revision September '05).

* ruby/ruby-gstreamer: (not to be confused with the newer, and separate,
ruby-gstreamer0.10) AFAIK nothing requires these bindings.

* wxwidgets/wx26:  Optional dependency only.

Removing GStreamer 0.8 from the package repo would mean that the first
four packages would also be removed, and wx-2.6 rebuilt without sound
support.  Of course, all removed packages' information would remain in
Ports CVS, for posterity's sake.

Having heard none, I'm removing GStreamer 0.8 tonight as part of a
massive update.

AFAIK Omega is neither a library nor a binding.   But I will consider

For the record, the problem was with the cygwin build of xine-lib as
follows:

Between 1.1.7 and 1.1.8, I added libmodplug to the repository as a
dependency for BMPx.  libmodplug is a C++ library which exposes
functions usable in C.  The problem was that the libmodplug.pc
pkg-config file explicitly added -lstdc++ to MODPLUG_LIBS, which was
among the LIBADD libs for xineplug_dmx_audio.la.  However, libtool
complained about the -lstdc++ because it is static only, and refused to
link a shared library, creating a (worthless) static one instead.
Furthermore, as xine-lib deletes the .la files during make install,
cygport wasn't able to catch the static module either.

(This wasn't an issue with bmpx because it is written in C++, and hence
links with g++, which anyway links with -lstdc++ and ignores the fact
that it's static only, where xine-lib is written in C.)

As mentioned in the most recent upload announcement, I've fixed the
libmodplug.pc file accordingly and rebuilt xine-lib, adding a check to
the latter's src_install() to catch a similar occurrence in the future.

Interesting question.  As a developer, they have set me up with rsync,
which I use for uploading, but that requires my password.  I do not know
of a way for anyone else to rsync from sunsite; I will ask sunsite if
this is possible.

But in the meantime, why do you want to mirror the Ports repository?

It is now working, as it was working before, if not during two weeks
during which I sent that message.
So, it's possible to rsync cygwinports from sunsite.dk, and it's wonderful!
I mirror the repository to be able to install the updates to computer
not connected to the internet, using a DVD. It's a simple, fast,
one-command way to be sure everything is updated.
